This is a perfect distillation of Trump and his populism versus the old GOP.
Trump comes down on the side of the American worker while free market principles really dictate the efficient allocation and application of capital on automation that doesn’t strike or renegotiate its deal every few years.
But this is a harbinger of things to come as AI and automation become more prevalent.
Your populace needs jobs to stabilize society (mainly the men). If AI and automation have taken all the labor-involved jobs, you’re going to have a whole lot of drunken dudes causing problems. It’ll be an Indian reservation on a larger scale.
You’ll have big business on one side maximizing value for shareholders by moving to automation with politicians and labor on the other side trying to save jobs for social cohesiveness purposes (the politicians) and naked power purposes (organized labor bosses).
Just wait until AI takes over legal services.

Why must he own goal? Ugh.

Before making a claim like this - research where all the automation material, tech, products were coming from and you will understand why he is doing this.
That and it helps the labor market for the MAGA initiatives and still allows automation to phase in when that automation can be 100% American made.

I agree with Trump on this one.
Also...with automation, are we going to be able to effectively monitor what is contained inside these shipping containers? Seems that needs to be even more scrutinized and examined these days.

I think trumps a populist at heart
It won him the election. I don’t think he needs to say or do anything different. He’s smart enough to know that automation is a benefit to the public though.

Can you rephase? I think this is a auto-correct typo.

to slow or limit automation that puts people out of work.
There’s a balance between what the union guys want and what the port operators want. The younger workers could agree to learn about automation and still have a high paying job while the company used attrition and retirement packages to reduce operating costs. It seems like the unions are just being stubborn and prefer the status quo at the detriment of the shareholders. That’s not negotiating. That’s sabotage.

Trump's opinion has big sway but legally I don't believe he can do much.

If its a federal project, it would require American made where possible.
It also shows that DOGE is just lip service and efficiency is not something he cares about.

Apparently, I'll be busy. Meanwhile, you will continue to coddle Trump's nuts nutsack, because you need an idol in your life.

It's probably more accurate to say that he harnesses populism.

I don't know why everyone is melting.
I read this as Trump voicing his support for laborers. He cannot prevent automation. He's pandering to blue collar workers. These particular blue collar workers are in the highest-paid blue collar industry in America ($85,000/yr starting wage, up to $200k+ with bonuses and overtime).
At some point automation will replace them. Like it or not, right or wrong, it's an inevitability.
If you are still relatively young and work for one of these industries that will likely eventually automate, I would strongly suggest trade school or private training to work on general equipment maintenance and repair as well as programmable logic. That's what I did 25 years ago, and it kept me employed in an industry that is rapidly automatic everything is can (primarily for safety/health reasons).
Now I'm not taking up for Trump's pandering in this instance. But, I get it. He campaigned on being the President of the average working man, so it would be unwise of him to not voice his support for their livelihoods and financial security that comes from their industry.

You know if you Kamala would have pandered to the populous side instead of the woke side she would have have increased her chances of winning and if she would have won you wouldn't be so disgruntled on a message board.

Campaigning as a populist is one thing, governing is another.
I suspect this is lip service, I dont think even Trump is this bad and he knows its bad for business.
