I would go all out thanking them for donating to charities and use it as a chance to explain why charities are better at helping people and causes than government.
I'd tell them clearly they agree since the donation didn't go to the IRS.

A donation to the Human Fund?

A copy of Human Sexuality And Reproduction For Dummies?

A fifth of Absolut and a bottle of Advil?

Yeah, we have a sizable chunk of my family deciding to skip Xmas this year due to Trump winning.

Mammaw and Paps are quite confused and not too happy with a few of my cousins and aunt. If they were to pull a stunt like this on the family I dont know what the result would be.

Preach. These are small-minded, narrow-minded, bigoted, petulant little children inside grown up bodies.

I can't believe that people would actually turn away from family over an election.

Hell I can...I have quit going around most of my extended family for years because all they want to do is talk about what Fox news told them to talk about and use horrible language to describe women and gay people and black people. Who needs to be around a bunch of bible thumping racist conservatives addicted to Fox news who are mad because their social security checks just don't fit the lifestyle of a 55 year old....life is too short and everyone of them will try to borrow money from you before they leave....

...because they are family? How often do you even see them?

What you are describing is not being around people that you don't like, which is fine -- even if they are family members.

I have a sister that I don't really like much. I've never done anything rude or mean, I just avoid her when possible. When together, we are completely polite and civil. She is a raging hippy liberal.

The OP is about people taking out a type of revenge for voting for a specific candidate in an election. None of them mentioned any bad treatment or rudeness they had received from any of their family members.

That is petty and sad.

Up until 2008 or so every year at least once...we have a big family reunion every Easter and we have always enjoyed going back and forth about politics...I remember the men in the family doing it when I was a kid..one of the reasons I enjoy talking about politics so much...but I moved out of the country permanently in late 2006 and only made it a couple of the reunions after that...I haven't been at all since 2014 when I had to pull my then 74 year old father off two 30 something distant cousins because they were pissed off about his having a union pension and having more income than they do working for a South Korean manufacturer who is the ultimate welfare recipient....Daddy was about to hurt the bastards LOL....he wouldv'e shot them had he been in his truck and not with me and my family LOL....

Most of them I would see a couple of times a year until we left the US....I just don't have time to listen to their bullshite. They are hateful and jealous and almost to a person somehow dependent on the federal government and can't stand anything about government.

I think it was inferred....you can't be around folks who are of the Fox News crowd without them spouting their shite non-stop....I am sure there are people on the left who are the same way but I have never met any. I wouldn't want to be around them if I did know 'em.

I have a good friend...my best friend outside of family...who is a staunch Republican and a conservative...as close to a true conservative as I have ever met and is almost without any racial animosity which is very rare in experience....and he and I will occasionally go at it pretty hot and heavy BUT we go out of our way to not let it effect our relationship negatively...it is a shame more of us aren't willing to argue about shite but let it go when we are done...

By the way I was just kidding about the NYT subscriptions...I am WAAAAAAYYYYYYYY to tight with money to spend it on political statements LOL!

Yes...I come from a long line of white trash....and almost all of them...with the exceptions of the ones who actually have jobs and careers, are republicans and have been since the early 80's. The majority of them dream of getting some sort of disability pension as that is the penultimate lifestyle...and they hate ANYONE who isn't white, christian and straight...even the gay ones...and there are some LOL....

And whats more is I know I ain't the only one with a family like this....everyone I ever met in the south had the same kind of folks in their family...I know many of y'all are going to claim you don't and that is good for you....but I bet if we met you would immediately see that our families are identical....it is the southern way!

And of course I am talking about actual southern families...I can't speak for any of you who are only 2nd or third generation southern....

Nope, no one would feel the actual need to justify it (or not) to someone like yourself who apparently is quite fond of stereotypes.
