OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and the White House are in ongoing talks about a possible government stake in the artificial intelligence company, CNBC confirmed on Friday.

The discussions have been in progress for more than a year, as Altman first shared the idea with the Trump administration in 2025, according to a source familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the details are confidential.

The talks continued this week as Altman met with a range of lawmakers and officials in Washington, D.C., about regulation and the latest developments in AI.

As part of the potential agreement, OpenAI could donate equity to the U.S. government to seed something like the “Public Wealth Fund” that the company outlined in its April policy proposal, the person said.

OpenAI said the fund could “invest in diversified, long-term assets” and would allow citizens to participate in the “upside” of AI growth, possibly by receiving the fund’s returns directly, according to the proposal.

No official investment terms have been decided, and the details are still subject to change. Notus was first to report the recent talks.

President Donald Trump addressed the talks while on Air Force One with reporters on Friday.

“There are concepts where pieces could be given to the American public, where the American public essentially becomes a partner,” he said.

The president said he is meeting with AI companies “in the very short, very near future.”

All of this is playing with fire.

No Intellectual property is safe.

human original content ---> LLM database ---> swirl it around with other shite ---> LLM "original" content ---> profit

See... its not IP theft.

Just compensate people for generating training data and you could have an entire new economy.

Who would you rather support:

1. The people who believe Trump is fighting socialism while his admin proposes literal socialist policies

or

2. The people who point out this cognitive dissonance

They've told everyone this. Hell, no one seems to care that Elon has openly advocated for the abolishment of all IP laws. People still think Elon is a good guy on their team.

Nationalizing AI will not be good.

Horrible idea.

If Biden proposed this, conservatives would be upset.

Yea because they know the Gov will pick the winners AKA them if they agree to this

Every AI company is vying right now to be the leader. The Gov owning shares in a few of them guarantees they win the fight

It would guarantee they could never fail. Any AI company backed by the federal government would undoubtedly receive favorable regulatory conditions and would be propped up no matter what kind of stupid decisions their leadership could make.

It’s also literally socialism

Correct. There is a term for this, too, regulatory capture. It's a very insidious and destructive aspect of crony capitalism.

They'll be playing with house money. Of course they're for the idea at this juncture.

Just imagine the combination of federal regulatory authority and state/local power for utilities regulation, eminent domain, etc. for building data centers.
