True but I think a happy medium is when you had to actually sit down at a computer to get on the internet and cell phones were only used for calling people

Very true, and you can add video games to that.

False. The internet is my window to the world. I get to see places I'll never be able to visit.
Ultimately, the internet is what you make it.
That's my two cents worth.

Do you realize the gatekeeping role the liberal media, Hollywood, etc. had pre-internet?
Posted on 9/25/25 at 7:09 am to ezride25
People actually got along better. You had to actually go out and meet people if you wanted to make friends. When you talk to people directly, you find that you have things in common, and because if that, you don't and can't hate them. It's common nature. You just have some disagreements. The internet brought people closer in order to communicate, but not closer to bonding. There is a big difference. It's made us lazier. How many kids today would rather go outside and play, rather than play on their phone or computer. Not too many. That has led to obesity.
So, the jury is still out on whether the world is better. It really depends on how you define it.

Internet isn’t the problem, it’s social media.
Internet was fine before every idiot had a platform

Do you realize that you only think you are smarter than everyone else?

EVERY one? That's not an accurate statement.

Don’t forget music was better too. Kids did sleep overs to play games together. Going to the movies was a huge thing.

I agree. It’s not so much the internet but smartphones that got us.
True social interaction is gone. Waiting in line or at the doctors office, everyone is 100% absorbed in the phones. Waze and Google maps are great but now people read news articles while driving. It affects personal relationships. How much personal time with your loved ones do you waste because of your phone? For most of us, it’s a lot. Way easier to pick up your phone to check Tigerdroppings or Tic Tok when there is a lapse in conversation and then both people are stuck in their phones for 20 minutes. Most all of are guilty. Look at the break room at your office, everyone on their phones. If you try to be better about it, everyone else is on their phone so you have no one to chit chat with.
That’s not even addressing the privacy aspect where everything we do is monitored by someone somewhere.
All that said, I wouldn’t want to give it up. I’m 100% guilty of everything I described above.

I’d love to go back to encyclopedia Britannica, card catalog, and pay phones.

Much like God creating the world and granting us free will, a controlled internet beyond preventing actual crime is inherently flawed as well and comes with its own set of problems.
But the question was not about whether the internet should have been controlled. The question was if the world was better before the internet.
Of course you can point to the will of the human to do evil. We are all accountable for our own actions. It just so happens that the internet gave humanity an incredible tool do evil without much effort.
The learning part of the internet is two-sided. Sure, in theory we can learn a lot in one place, but how much disinformation is on the internet, and unless we're willing to become investigators, we're still kind of stuck with having to go to the library to find credible sources, just to make sure what we read on the internet wasn't made up. People use wikipedia, thinking they're learning so many things, but it's controlled by biased human beings who edit out facts and replace them with myths, on the regular.
It was inevitable that this would happen when the internet was invented just like AI will only get worse in how it is used. We can all see that. Which is why, if these things were never invented, the world would be a better place. Maybe not "good" place, but a better one.
It's odd... People say that with the internet, we've become more connected with the world than ever before, because of the ability to instantly communicate with anyone, anywhere. But I'd argue we're more disconnected than we've ever been. Everything is fragmented, and there is so little human connection. Just abbreviated messages, and angry rants hiding behind a screen.

The internet simply exposed the human problem that had been growing and getting worse before the internet hit the scene. The problem originates from parents abandoning parenting, leaving the raising of their greatest asset up to television and later the internet, our society abandoning God, and Christians fast asleep. Something else was bound to take it’s place, and that was the opposite of those Godly morals and values this country abandoned. It was certainly never going to remain an empty vessel. The entertainment industry, and a morally perverse agenda driven education system stepped up to the plate to fill that void. The internet is simply an extension of this, 24/7, in the palm of your hand, and people are so obsessed that it even competes for our attention when talking to others in front of us, or say driving tons of metal vehicles down the road every day.
Looking at America today is like looking at a disassembled engine through the eyes of a 3 year old. You know it was fully functioning at one point, but now it’s a hot mess, and the three year old doesn’t even know if the engine identifies as an engine, much less if the piston goes in the cylinder or are somehow paired together. People start getting rid of the pistons telling people they don’t need them anymore, and so society starts blaming everything on the pistons. It’s no great wonder the engine is not functional any longer, especially since we threw away the manual long ago, thinking it was outdated and also unnecessary for the engine to work properly.

Your critical thinking skills and common sense would increase exponentially without the internet.

yea because Boomers and Silent generation weren't brainwashed by propaganda from the govt through legacy media or by legacy media itself before the internet.

The fact that people can openly state this with no moral conviction behind a keyboard and an anonymous profile is one of the reasons the internet has been our downfall.
Would you announce this to anyone in public?
Not being judgemental. Just offering some perspective on the OP.
