Today (January 19) is Robert E. Lee’s birthday. A timely quote?

*This is not a was or wasn’t the Civil War about slavery? post.
It’s an excerpt of a response Lee penned to Lord Acton (of “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” fame) on December 15, 1866.
Whether or not you believe the trope, those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it … I think an argument can be made that history’s echoes never go away.

The South was right about the Yankee Empire.
Just look at it today. Military bases around the world and forever wars.

Mr. Blair, I look upon secession as anarchy. If I owned the four millions of slaves in the South, I would sacrifice them all to the Union; but how can I draw my sword upon Virginia, my native State?
There are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will not acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil.
"It is well that war is so terrible. Otherwise, we would grow too fond of it."

I think that the majority or all of his direct descendants live in places other than Virginia. A lot of them served in the US Navy. Some are in CA and one was a Lt Gov in Maryland some live in Boston and I think also in upstae NY and if memory serves one in TX

Should we trade it for a Southern empire? South had designs on N.Mexico.

What people tend to forget about the above quotation is that it was said while his army was slaughtering the Federals in front of Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg. The man was absolutely enjoying it and had to remind himself that these were human beings who were being killed in their thousands.

You think the mouth breathers in the South would've turned us into Switzerland?
I don't, but even so, thankfully they lost.

Just FYI: today is also the birth date of Edgar Allan Poe. FWIW.

Is this the part where you pretend to be emotionally invested in the Civil War?

We'll never know thanks to the Yankee penchant for Karen-like meddling.

A favorite quote and it's never been more true than now.

"So far from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that Slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interest of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this that I would have cheerfully lost all that I have lost by the war, and have suffered all that I have suffered to have this object attained."
"Remember, we are all one country now. Dismiss from your mind all sectional feeling, and bring them up to be Americans."
"Sir, if you ever presume again to speak disrespectfully of General Grant in my presence, either you or I will sever his connection with this university."
My favorite is an anecdote that reportedly happened during his presidency of Washington University. A fellow professor, also a Confederate veteran, observed Lee near the gates of the university, engaging with a fellow who was obviously not in the best of circumstances by his appearance and dress. They were speaking in lowered tones and Lee seemed to be almost consoling the man who was shaking Lee's hand and appeared to nod and sob. The observer waited until they disengaged and then approached Lee and asked, "Sir, who was that man?"
Lee replied, "That was an old soldier who now finds himself down on his luck. I have been helping him of late." The observer asked, "A Virginian? In which regiment did he serve?" Lee answered, "He was one of those who fought against us."
