re: Today (January 19) is Robert E. Lee’s birthday. A timely quote?

Of course.
As a loyal colonial member of the Empire I would like it to do some more Empire type stuff. I think its been slacking off.
I propose that the Empire quit screwing around and go ahead and make Ukraine the 51st state.
Now that would be a proud moment for the Empire!

Lees quote expresses the fear that drove secession. People believed that if we did not secede, we would find ourselves permanently ruled by a hostile block of northern states, who would “enslave” us.
People had this vision of the south trapped in perpetual servitude to the north.

All of the old Virginia families are still there. Harrison’s, Tyler’s, Lee’s, Spencer’s, Randolph’s.

Does anyone believe any of the states would have agreed to the Constitution if they were told it was a permanently binding document with zero democratic way of getting out?

That would make no sense knowing that the country was birthed by secession.

It isn’t; don’t listen to folks who repeat that falsehood.
Nowhere does The Constitution say as much.
Just because a state has yet to peacefully divorce itself from an abusive relationship with the federal government doesn’t mean it won’t happen.
The FFs did not intend for the Union to be “indivisible” in perpetuity.
Don’t forget: That word was added to the Pledge of Allegiance post-Civil War(1892)—likely to force an atmosphere of national unity.

For propaganda purposes.

Imagine all that free and cheap labor!

And there is something else the Empire needs to do.
It's been too long since it nuked anyone.
I think it's time to remind the world how badass the Empire is.
How about popping Yemen? They've been asking for it.

While your statement may be true in theory, it is definitely not true in practice as we have seen.
The federal government will never allow any state or states to be independent and they will use the force of the federal government to prohibit that

I don't think you understand the actual founding of the United States. A state is a sovereign political entity. The original thirteen states were sovereign states/nations in their own right. The federal government was created by them in order that they may work together for common causes and hold together for a common defense against invasion from European powers. The federal government was created with very limited (and specifically enumerated) powers which were to be used to the benefit of all the states which ratified the Constitution.
Unfortunately, the word "state" is bandied about flippantly with no understanding of what a state truly is. In the minds of students of our public schools over the past several decades, the word "state" (in relation to Kentucky, Virginia, New Jersey, Louisiana, or any other state) is equivalent to "province." However, nothing could be further from the truth! Unfortunately, I fear that this concept is beyond your ability to comprehend. And, without an understanding of this concept, the idea of a constitutional republic with a limited federal government will remain entirely and fully beyond your cerebral grasp.
