I wanted to vote for one and voted for the other (because the one I wanted was out by the time my primary came along).

In an idealistic vacuum they might be "FAR superior to Donald Trump."

For better or worse, the modern president (and probably all presidents) don't operate in an idealistic vacuum.

He was my second choice.

Not a fan of Rand Paul.

I thought you were going to say Rubio , Kasich and Bush.

See, I have my idealized unicorn candidate that would support EVERY pet idea I have as well.
That's literally only 4 stances I would support. Four. That's it. If having 4 issues of literally 20 off the top of my head to you is considered a "unicorn candidate", then your standards are severely and horribly low when choosing the leader of our country.

I'm not naive (or narcissistic) enough to think there could ever possibly be a SEPARATE POLITICAL PARTY built around that.
Legalizing pot, have a flat tax, and get out of the Middle East is narcissistic in your eyes? How narcissistic of me!

quote:

I guess it cam be mostly harmless to dream, though.
As I said, your standards are low. I really don't think that federally legalizing pot (which is legal in multiple states already), getting out of the middle east (which the majority of Americans think), and upgrading our infrastructure is some really huge pie in the sky type of thing here. I suppose the flat tax could be a pipe dream, but it was a big talking point last election.

Until that possibly comes along, I will just vote for whoever comes closest, even if nobody is often really close and/or (more often these days) whoever is LESS socialist.
Which is why I'll vote Trump in 2020
quote:

I've yet to see any evidence that longing for a mythical third party serves any purpose at all, though.
You really do have low standards

No, those are pipe dreams (or at least 2 out of 3). Narcissism is thinking you would be able to do something to make it happen. The rest of your post tells me you're a bit more realistic than that.

ETA: I've been supporting Trump for awhile I should add but I"ve had my Trump bashing on record here and even made many comments over the years in support of some democrats and certain issues I supported Obama on. I do think Trump probably doesn't understand the do's and dont's since he's hasn't been a politician and makes some mistakes but I am supporting him now due to what he's done since he's been in office.

In regards to high stakes D.C. Politics, Trump is the proverbial bull in a China closet. 100% of the DC Dims hate him and probably 30% of the R's wouldn't mind seeing him defeated in 2020. Trump is unlike most D.C. Politicians, he wasn't groomed to slide into the Swamp culture and he's unquestionably a threat .

Which history are we talking about here?

Legalizing pot was thought of as pie in the sky. It's now legal in 11ish states. Women were not allowed to vote at a period in time. Purchasing alcohol was illegal at one time as well. Same sex marriage? Preposterous! Interstates was crazy talk at one point. Implementation of Social Security was a pretty big change in history. All these off the top of my head, all within just the past 100 years.

Now, I'm not exactly sure which history you follow, or what you choose to ignore, but honestly the 4 things that I would consider a good platform is really nothing that is outrageous, history making, or "unicorns" as you say. I think those are easily achievable.

The idea of a viable third party in this country, not all that other shite.

Oh, hell yeah, of course. You running? I might even be persuaded to vote for you based on your proposed platform.

Legalizing cannabis would basically solve all of America's problems/issues. We would need to be able to export it so we'd have to get our neighbors on board.

Oh and ban 11:00am kickoff times in september for college football.

Okay, but have you looked at Congress lately? We're at a political impasse on every issue under the sun. At some point you have to build coalitions to pass legislation. For better and worse, it's always a compromise and it takes a delicate touch sometimes. The "bull in a china shop" might be effective sometimes, but that can't be the only arrow in your quiver.

OK, now that's actually a good discussion.

With all of the tribalism and extremes going on currently - not only in regards to politicians but also the general public, are we really that far away from a third party? A centrist/moderate one?

I’m independent but tend to vote mostly R because social issues tended to have been solved through courts far easier than economic ones.

I’m extremely pro gun and fiscally somewhat conservative, although I do support socialist programs that exist in the Tennessee valley. Socially I’m probably extremely liberal, I don’t want your religious nonsense dictating people’s lives. Keep your morality to yourself and for f*ck sake let us have weed already.

Based on the candidates from the D’s, I will probably just throw away my vote because it doesn’t matter in Tenn. It’s not a swing state and I can vote how I feel. If I was in a swing state, I would most likely vote Trump based on current circumstances. Still awhile to go though and I could see people flipping easy depending something else happening.

Independent voter and huge Trump supporter from the get go. Most of the far rights i know were supporting people like Ben Carson and Lying Ted. It was the more centrist that entered the party and won the nominee for Trump.

I’m an independent thinker but I vote 90% republican. Childhood indoctrination is hard to shake and I think my grandmother would haunt me if I voted democrat.
Both sides suck eggs but the dems are doing a great job of making republicans seem downright virtuous by comparison.
I can’t begin to understand how they rationalize their decisions or how they live with themselves.
