I guess the only flaw in the "rights from God" idea is that if another group of believers become in charge of the government, you will suddenly find out that your rights are coming from a different God than yours.

Take any basic Political Theory class and you are learn most theories start with the notion of natural rights. Is the social contract we form governments, but with the understanding the exists of natural rights. We just argue constantly what those natural rights are which leads to political divisions.

At the philosophical level, yes. At the practical level he's correct. It's not as if everybody will agree on what those "inalienable rights" are, so we're left with the messiness of figuring it out.

I'm talking about the post you took issue with from True Tiger, not Tim Kaine. True Tiger is 100% correct. Merely acknowledging that inalienable rights exist is a far cry from everybody agreeing on what those rights are.
