Well there is more overlap between Islam and Judaism than there is Judaism and Christianity in its direct pattern of practice. Islam is a syncretic version Judaism with pre-Islamic Arab paganism, combined with aspects of Christianity and Zoroastrianism. The differences that arise are more of a modern development, but Islam very closely resembles Judaism.
If I recall, the Christ story in the Qu'ran closely resembles a book from the Biblical Apocrypha. I can't remember the name at the moment though.

When your belief system is built around fairy tales (that even Christians admit one can't take literally) then it leaves much up to interpretation.

Bull.

Excellent articulation. This is how these religions should be taught in schools if they must

The first two are accurate, the last one is bullshite.

Islamic Turks routinely raided my ancestor’s island in Greece and massacred the inhabitants.
Maybe it was a tolerant massacre. I dunno.

That’s leaves out about 1900 years of interactions. Just because we are friends now doesn’t erase it.

It's amazing how the Islamic invasions of the Balkans, Sicily, and Spain never make it into the textbooks.
When I tell liberals my ancestors were kicked out of their homeland by Muslims and forced to convert to Islam they are dumbfounded.

It is the LADOE. You weren’t aware the state had an education department?

Islam: "I support your belief in other religions and respect your faith as you are about to get beheaded."

This was definitely the place to seek advice, as opposed to your PLC or other Social Studies educators. Good job.

You sound like public education is not a matter for the public.

Quit acting like you're mandated to give that lesson. The curriculum guides are a reference and provide suggested resources. And they are nearly always outdated garbage. Make your own lessons. As to your specific post:
quote:
Jews and Christians are specifically protected in the Quran as Peoples of the Book, reinforcing their spiritual connection to Islam by virtue of having been given revelations from God. The Islamic legal tradition has upheld the rights of Jews and Christians to maintain their beliefs and practices within their communities in Islamic lands, and this policy of tolerance has generally been upheld.
As far as this particular statement, it's historical fact. "People of the Book" were second-class citizens but were protected legally. In the early Middle Ages under the Caliphate, many Jews prospered and even held high government positions. Were there some periods and regions in which Jews and Christians were heavily persecuted, removed or killed, yes, obviously. But, Christians and Jews were protected minorities under Islam. Dhimmis are non-muslims living under Muslim rule who are offered legal protection. This is a term that students need to know for AP World History. It is important testable information; it isn't something that PBS is just making up. Christians weren't required to convert, but they were required to pay a poll tax as the price of protection.
Sure, taken in isolation those highlighted statements you posted are oversimplistic and need context but it's your job to provide that context.

My first thought is that, despite the propaganda and indoctrination, Christianity has NOTHING to do with Islam. Their god is not the Christian God. Show me where it says that Allah had a Son.
To say that many Christians in the Middle East converted to Islam without further saying that they had the choice to convert or be killed (and many time they WERE killed even after converting) is additional BS perpetrated by the writers of the modern curriculum.
Period.

Just to be clear, you are saying the Louisiana Student Standards Scooe and Sequence that was just released is outdated and not a roadmap for instruction?
Also, I consider myself among the few teachers out there who actually think for themselves and try to find multiple sources to offer students a spectrum of perspectives to help inform their learning and decision making.
What do you think the vast majority of teachers who do not or will not put in the work are going to give their students when it comes time? I’ll answer that. The sources offered in the scope and sequence.
At any rate, my point in posting this was to hear what people thought about the summaries that are clearly slanted in favor of one religion. If students hear nothing else, they will leave this activity believing that Christians would like to suppress and/or oppress people of other religions while Muslims would simply tip their hat and say welcome brothers. This is clearly not the case.

Thank you for pulling the veil off of this crap and telling it like it is. And hats off to you for thinking for yourself and encouraging your students to do the same! It's a very tough thing these days.
