Without reading the article, you just know the parent was to blame. Our jobs as parents is to look out for the kid and do what's best regardless if the child agrees. We're parents, not friends. If your kids like you, that's great, but it's not the most important thing.

Naw. We focus too much on mental health. We’re imprinting on kids the idea that depression is normal by our mainstreaming of it. Anecdotal evidence follows: My cousin’s kid had never struggled with (or even thought about, as far as her parents knew) cutting until she attended a school assembly designed to help kids struggling with cutting. She started cutting.
We’re creating whole new categories of mental illnesses for kids to accessorize and then we get surprised when they choose them.

My son said if you're not black or gay at High School, you are nobody.

Your cousin's kid is way behind the times. Hormone treatment & genital mutilation is the new cutting. If the kid is an overweight female, she can just cut her hair short, buy some Wranglers, & put on a plaid shirt. In their version of reality, this is all it takes to be a man.

The suicide rates are not higher from bullying or discrimination. The suicide rates are higher because they’re mentally ill. It supports the argument that there is no such thing as transgender. They’re just mentally ill.
