It’s not really shocking that the group with the least amount of jobs, least amount of income, and least amount of life experience are the most “socialist.”

Honest question.....what in the frick happened that caused this huge age divide?
You serious?
It’s pretty simple: the myth of pure capitalism and trickle-down (
Couple that with the fact that we’ve essentially created a generation (or two) of indentured servants, who went to college with a proverbial gun to their head by their parents, promising that was the only route to wealth, and instead these young(-ish) people are now struggling (and often failing) to just stay afloat, in a sea of overwhelming and crushing debt.
Now you have a pissed off and better-informed public who want a change. I honestly don’t know what world you guys live in where you don’t see this, or think you can pretend it’s not there. The genie is out of the bottle. It’s over.

MI gets it.
The piece TD misses is that Trump's nationalism, while adorable, fails to control international companies.
The world trade org is going to rule the world.

How fricking stupid
like anybody should be stupid enough to rely on the benevolence of a bunch of bureaucrats to "control international companies"
"Controlling international companies" is a fricking repulsive idea.

This generation hasn’t hit its peak earning years yet. They’ll be singing a different tune when their effective tax rates double (or more) to pay for programs from which they largely won’t benefit much (especially free university).
Honestly, I’m not that worried about it: the rhetoric was a lot more strident fifty years ago than it is now. Generations grow up.
Edit to add: What I think is much more likely to happen is inter-generational political conflict wherein the youngsters start trying to re-allocate public monies towards their pet programs and away from Medicare and Social Security (which are so, so, so very expensive). It’d take a 3 - 5% raise in the effective rates across all tax brackets just to close the current deficit, much less pay for things like Medicare for All, free university, stringent green regulations, etc., etc.
They’ll get into power and realize that there’s not enough taxable income and wealth in the “wealthy” brackets to pay for these programs. They’ll be forced to raise taxes quite a bit on the middle and working classes to pay for them (like some of the Europeans do). They’ll also cut programs for older people to re-allocate for M4A or whatever. That’ll piss a lot of voters off and then they’ll be back out on their asses.

Where is the 34-55 group. We Xers are always left out.
Exactly...we are the ones carrying the burden and load of the country now and we are always ignored.

The 18-24 set, eh, whatever, they don't know any better.
But the 25-34 set... these are the people who are currently dealing with crushing student loan debt, plus a job market that for younger workers still isn't that great. This defines 95% of the age group.
Meanwhile, they look at the other 5% in their age group, who went to fancy high schools, fancy colleges, and drive fancy cars, all paid for by daddy. Which, whatever, good for daddy. But, they then see those kids getting the best jobs at the best companies, because daddy got them those jobs.
They probably don't really want socialism, but they see that we are probably the closest to a caste society that we have been in 100 years.

Are you really going to argue that the internet hasn't completely transformed what "informed" is? 25 year olds now can go online and see up to date info on nearly any topic they want.
I don't think you've really thought your position through that well.

quote:If you think the average 25 year old uses the internet to inform themselves then you need to rethink your position. The UNDERSTANDING of basic issues is less today than it was 20 years ago. People today are just informed enough to be dangerous. I’d rather them be less informed to be honest. Most people can’t be trusted with knowledge of the actual world.

Except for 80s movies, nobody gave a single frick about Generation X. We didn't bitch or moan nearly as much as the generations on either side. We just went out in the world and got shite done.

It's certainly expanded the misinformed.
