no but in the 60s you could finish high school and go get a job at the local Ford service department and buy a house while your wife stayed at home and raised kids. Something changed

Millenial: hey, this is a problem, can you fix it?
Democrats: yes it is a problem, we hear you, we see you, here’s our solution (that makes the problem WAY worse)
Republicans: quit whining, that’s not a problem, pull yourself up by your boot straps, you Commie!

I like your post. It’s pretty spot on. Except, Republicans have it right. The ONLY thing thst is going to reverse the trend is reversion to more personal responsibility, and less dependence on government to make everything “affordable” to everyone.
I see no appetite for that among any significant population group.
i think it's pretty fair.
a rogan guest put it pretty well recently that:
Republicans usually have the brains to recognize what the problem is, but don't have the heart to fix it.
democrats have the heart to fix it, but don't have the brains to realize what the real problem is.
i've never been on the left, but i do genuinely get some of the gripes of occupy wall street, bernie, AOC, etc.
I just think their ideas to fix things will make everything worse than it is now.

You are right and that's why the Republican establishment is hated by REAL Conservatives.
The only differences between a Democrat politician and an establishment Republican is on abortion & guns.
They both love open borders & globalism.
I will NEVER vote for a Republican establishment candidate again.
bingo...
know how to identify one? look at where they get their campaign $ from...

im middle class... im getting hammered... theres your numbers... The middle class is shrinking... the globalist (Rinos and Dems) want to destroy the middle class... theyre elitest... they want top tier and the bottom...

not bad... but i think democrats are genuinely evil and they dont give a shite about anyone but themselves... Elitest Rino republicans are the same...

The Democrats used to be full of classic liberals but both of them have none of the heart and soul. More like punting the football over and over again until someone gets into terrible field position. Republicans fumble the ball, the Dems scope and score for the win.

I gave my employees a 5% raise around Christmas and that’s been nullified for one.

I got a 10% raise in November and I haven’t even felt it.
The other day I was at the grocery store and they had 2x10lb briskets for 3.99 a pound (expired the next day ) and I almost bought them both because it’s been $6.99 an Lb for 6months.

nah... alot more than that... money had way more buying power back then... we need to get back to those days where one person can work in the family and the wife can stay home to raise kids... that aint happening with the elites in charge...those billion dollar profits are going to hedgefund managers and CEOs instead of the workers... and dumbass republicans are sitting on 100 year old ways of "but unregulated free market works!" yeah...till your enemy takes control of the market... balancing a stick requires focusing on the middle...

quote:Right. I'm not sure how to even address that anecdote. It's only a single point reference. No baseline. No historical data. I guess it says nice things about you that you have middle class employees, if that's the message you were sending.

Historical HH income levels inflation adjusted per capita. Flat for a while after the dot com bubble, 9/11 until 2007. Again, these are IAD's so "flat" indicates salary increase on par with USD devaluation. Could one define flat in IADs as "hammered"?:
Here is a more recent breakout. IAD's with a substantial gain. Not hammered.
or intergenerational performance of US GDP per capita vs the EU:
or home size:
or HH expenses:
So again, when someone says the US middle class is getting hammered, I'm curious to know the reference.

I bought a home for $78k in 1985, interest rate then on a 30 year note was about 15%, I assumed the seller’s 9.9% mortgage and felt like I stole the house. Using available data and a online mortgage calculator, It looks like the $450k home with a 5% mortgage is actually just as affordable in today’s dollars as the $76k home at 15% was in 1980, in terms of mortgage payment and household income.

The average new house in 1980 was ~1650sqft.
In 2021 it was ~2650sqft.
Adjusting for size, that 1650sqft home would go for $280K in 2021.
Now do the 16% notes in 1980 vs 3% notes in 2021.
---
Plus, I'll promise you the accoutrements/appointments in the 2021 home would blow the 1980 home away.

Pew says self-reported middle-class runs from about $37K to $237K. That's pretty expansive. How would you define US middle class? Mid-3 quintiles?
