I just got back from SF.

The laws and application are always vague so it's hard to know what's what. Here's what Ballotpedia says about voter ID in CA.
California does not require voters to present identification before casting a ballot in most cases. However, some voters may be asked to show a form of identification when voting if they are voting for the first time after registering to vote by mail and did not provide a driver license number, California identification number, or the last four digits of their social security number.[3][4] On September 29, 2024, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed SB 1174 into law prohibiting any jurisdiction in the state from adopting a local law that requires voters to present ID before voting.

Cal already requires ID. It did when I registered, and still does, as far as I know.

It doesn't. No state does, as per federal law. All you have to do attest to being a US citizen "under penalty of perjury".
And then it'll be pointed out that there's no widespread voter fraud because it's illegal to vote if you're a noncitizen, which is plenty because as you know, if people know something is illegal, they'll never do it.
