If my neighbor and I both needed home repairs at the same time and I tell him I spent $30,000 because I needed to have my foundation fixed, and he looks at me and laughs because he only spent $3,000 on his repairs—which were mostly just a paint job—I would think he is retarded.

Obama attempted to fix structural issues and failed, and the pool still leaked thousands of gallons daily. Literally nothing was fixed, and money was just pissed away.
After the "fix" people complained that it smelled like a sewer, was full of algae, and how ugly it was. It was basically a cow pond you find in the middle of a field
Those structural issues were still present when Trump took on the project, and he fixed it using a sealant for less than half of what Obama's attempted repairs were and even less than that, accounting for inflation.
It wasn't paint but a sealant but you knew that and just want to lie as you always do

I'm not going to lie, I liked it better when it was painted dark/black. I feel like it reflected better during the daytime and was more consistent at night.
But either way the refurbishment was a huge success. Better job at a better price. It's a small win for our country.
Between this, the fountain refurbishment, and if the arch gets done (I doubt it though), I'd love to see DC returned to be a clean, architectural icon, but ai've got money on Kalshi that before 2030 everything's going to be trashed, dystopian shithole again.
ETA: I do think the proposed gold on the arch is tacky. Just let it be granite, marble, and limestone. It's what I think of when I think of D.C. monuments and memorials.

Trump puts gold on everything. Once the Dems are in charge, the gold will disappear anyway. If gold leaf, they'll figure out how to steal it. If just gold paint, it'll be covered in graffiti.
