After the Aurora shooting, some Colorado outlets like the Denver Post shifted focus from the shooter to the victims and community.
Here’s a better idea. Stop fricking reporting them at all.

Yeah dude, because government and media memory holing information about these shooters has totally helped bring down the number of mass shootings, /sarc.

My daughter had a class member commit suicide.
The school went almost silent on the topic beyond some initial offers of mental health support.
I started asking questions and found that many schools in the area had offered advice on controlling the official outpouring of grief and remembrance. They had students commit suicide and the remembrance of those students had blossomed into some odd suicide ideation by impressionable kids who longed for the kind of visibility and empathy that the now dead kid received upon committing suicide.
What’s absolutely awful is that the media is well aware of their influence. And they choose clicks over social responsibility every single time. All while virtue signaling that they hold the correct views.

I like how these shootings have just become a way for people to score political points now.
Not just now, but for a long time.

Yeah, I feel that too. When something seems to just disappear, it can feel like we’re being spun, and in today’s media mess, that’s a normal suspicion to have. Everybody recoils when they think gatekeepers are quietly deciding what we’re allowed to see. Exploiting that feeling is actually an aspect of a lot of modern propaganda.

This is more or less how China, Iran, and Russia handle their information sectors. I'd prefer we not move that direction.

It certainly seems to be a tool of it.
Appreciate the thoughtful response.

Oh grow the frick up. I didn’t argue that it had to be driven by the government. If the media is really interested in their social duties, they would step up and act upon actual no notoriety standards. Not manufacture ones that still facilitate clicks and impressions.

I agree and think they should live up to their own standards, and your daughter's school example is poignant and sad. You might be right that less reporting over might be best, but there's probably some ways to be more responsible. And it's not like information won't still circulate widely digitally and you start to have all the problems of rumor-only info with no authoritative accounts. I don't have the answer, btw.

Notice how you clipped off 'and media' from my post.
You are losing your touch on the contrarian troll farming.

If so, they have no duty to report the truth.
“Hurr durr that’s my point. Hurr durr.”
No one listens to you because you’re trying to be clever and end up sounding like the average suburban dippy mom.

Hiding the fact that some folks are DANGEROUS is just as bad.
I hate to paint with a broad brush (actually I don't care), but all liberals are now dangerous. They're acting out on their hatred and are pissed (and subsequently dangerous) because they're losing in everything.

Their lies are the foundation for all of this so you are correct, they’re all dangerous.

There are real effects, and this shooting is an example of how. The Contagion Effect is real, and the over-promotion of Sandy Hook was the spark that lit this kid's psychosis way back in 2012.
More copycats from religious, evangelical, right wing conservatives like this guy right, lol

Would you call a racist who was promoting neo-Nazi antisemitism with a history of doing Nazi salutes as early as 7th grade a liberal?
