The "Jews are God's Chosen People" is an old testament thing, right?

From wiki:
Fast forward into the New Testament:
So how does modern Isreal apply to the Old Testament when in 1 Peter the Christian believers are the "chosen people":
I don't mind helping Israel defend itself from terrorists attacks however stop using the religious justification that the modern day Jews are God's chosen people. That was the Jews of the Old Testament.
quote:
In Judaism, the concept of the Jews as the chosen people (Hebrew: ????? ????????? ha-?am ha-niv?ar , IPA: ha?am hanivhar) is the belief that the Jews, via descent from the ancient Israelites, are the chosen people, i.e. selected to be in a covenant with God. The idea of the Israelites being chosen by God is found most directly in the Book of Deuteronomy[1] as the verb ba?ar (??????), and is alluded to elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible using other terms such as "holy people".[2] Much is written about these topics in rabbinic literature. The three largest Jewish denominations—Orthodox Judaism, Conservative Judaism and Reform Judaism—maintain the belief that the Jews have been chosen by God for a purpose. Sometimes this choice is seen as charging the Jewish people with a specific mission—to be a light unto the nations, and to exemplify the covenant with God as described in the Torah.
Fast forward into the New Testament:
quote:
Romans 9:6-8
6 It is not as though God’s word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. 7 Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”[a] 8 In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring.
Galatians 3:29
29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
So how does modern Isreal apply to the Old Testament when in 1 Peter the Christian believers are the "chosen people":
quote:
1 Peter 2:9
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

+1
Israel is the right side here, but the Bible isn’t why.

Are people, western nations, really using this as a justification?

That is what zionism is all about.

The United States has historically supported the Jews because during the first half of the 20th century our nation was overwhelmingly Dispensationally Protestant.
Look it up.
Thankfully, this is no longer the case.

It's all about prophecy for these people. The thumpers interpret scripture using an eschatological model that makes Israel the lynchpin of everything that will happen leading up to Christ's return.

All they have is the OT, baw. The New Testament is just "some guys did some things" to them.

Not directly.
There are evangelicals and mega-churchers though who are infatuated with Israel because of their interpretations of the Bible.

Right wing talk radio uses this justification in passing a lot. I remember Sensi and Glen Beck going down a litany of reasons to support Israel (much of it justified) and they add at the end, "Afterall they are God's chosen people".

If you’re inferring that old = expired, you’re sadly mistaken.

Israel are those born again, born of the spirit - by faith.
Jacob are the people born of the flesh, by genology descendants of Abraham.
Israel are the seeds of Abraham, who was the first born of the spirit on Mt Moriah.
The Jews were chosen to be the people that the Christ would come from, he is the seed.
God is no respecter of person, you don't get a special treat by birthright or lineage, hence why Jesus came from Judah and not Levi (as the Law required a priest to be from Levi)

I'm not.
I'm inferring the Old revealed in the New.

Correct. The church is the new Israel.

Do your history. We gave them the land and have sworn to protect them because of it

It basically exists today as a Christian Fundamentalist trope and as an antisemitic trope to portray a Jewish over-inflated sense of self-worth. You will hear it in the churches as a defense and derisively as a slur.

A read of the book of Hebrews addresses much of this - might be worth considering

The Jews are God's chosen people because they wrote the Bible.
Who else were they going to make the chosen people? The Philistines? "No, I know, well make the people of Jericho the chosen ones. OPPS! We can't do that, we killed them all."
Had I wrote the Bible, good ol' Southern rednecks would be the chosen people.

quote:This right here, and it should be terrifying to the rest of the world. And a lot of it is because of the Scofield bible which instructs Christians to revere the Jews as their leaders. It's just slimy and perverse, and should have been dramatically called out long ago.
