The false equivalency of Govt budgeting - Raise Taxes or Cut Service Never seek efficiency

I'm so tired of the budgeting and planning talking points of "we either have to raise taxes or cut services" its a false equivalency.
There is almost never a discussion about efficiency and are they rooting out and cutting wasteful spending. DOGE was an attempt but its stated objective was oversold and underdelivered.
Anyone who has worked in a business of any reasonable size (much less the actual government) knows there is massive fraud/waste/abuse that can be targeted but that's never talked about.

A huge chunk of any government budget, from local, county, state or federal is wasted or outright stolen through fraud.
It's by design. I'm all for a strong military but they could probably be just as effective with a 50 percent budget reduction if they cut out all the fraud, waste, theft and inefficiencies.
There are billions of dollars in unneeded military spending each year that can't be canceled because it takes place in the districts of power politicians.

There’s the rub, though. The average citizen isn’t in a position to analyze specifics to determine true efficiency or inefficiency. It’s usually based upon emotion or one’s starting point of view…

This might actually be an understatement.
The whole system is corrupt and there are millions of people who understand this and make their livings off of the corruption. (most of which, claim to be poor).
Until there is a true incentive to change it, (think, third world type revolution) nothing will change. America will continue to rise above all other nations by standing on the backs of the working class until there is no more working class. The leaders of this country are really not smart enough to keep from killing the golden goose.

Excellent point. A co-worker and I were talking about something similar this morning, about how many people pick up causes without bothering to look at the issue well enough to determine whether what they are protesting for/against is causation or correlation.

There was a period of time in the State of Texas when we employed the use of CQI/TQM and we became very efficient at the hospital [inpatient psych]. It was a challenging yet rewarding time as I truly believe - at least in that moment - where the taxpayer was receiving a reasonable service for their dollar

Congress is the problem. When Nixon was sinking they pushed through a bill to take away the power of Office of Management and Budget to control money that was approved by congress. Now once approved it HAS to be spent.
Second step, put in the filibuster.
Third step, no bill can survive the filibuster but a huge omnibus spending bill.
And we are screwed.
DOGE was an excellent idea, one the people wanted, but Congress didnt so it was tossed, just like the save act.
I like Bessent but he is wrong about growing ourselves out of this hole. Our budgets continue to outstrip our tax collections, no matter how much we grow.

One example, albeit tangential, would be NASA-Boeing Starliner-SpaceX Dragon.
If SpaceX wasn't in the picture, Boeing would've gotten the contract exclusively, and they could fail and delay and keep squeezing NASA for more money. There was little incentive to do better and nothing to show ho inefficient it was.
Likewise, NASA has developed processes over the years that are inefficient. They were the only show in town. If we the people wanted things done faster, then the only response was to throw more money at it. There was no incentive to do better. NASA had bigger fish to fry, e.g., Muslim outreach and DEI aspirations.
Then SpaceX arrived on the scene and they embarrass NASA's old way almost daily.
And to be fair, NASA helped facilitate SpaceX getting on its feet.
