The nose-holding is silly, but if I don't use goggles I can barely stand the chemicals anymore. I don't know if they've upped the amount they use since I was a kid or if my eyes just can't handle it anymore, but it burns like crazy.

umm if they have frickin corn rows they dont need swim caps
and a swim cap works just fine for afros and even afro puffs (aka micky mouse ears called a hair style)
i love the part about fear of drowning as an excuse
if you are on a swim team you should be able to swim dont you think?

I've told this story before - damned near 40 years ago, I was at Boy Scout summer camp in picturesque Trout, Louisiana (Camp Attakapas, which is some kind of cultural appropriation that somehow slipped passed the PC culture). There was a troop of black scouts coming through for the first time with us.
Great guys, but they could not swim or canoe worth a frick. They came in last in the "in and out" canoe race so bad we had to swim out and tow them in.
Good times...
(ETA: And us white scouts with the "good" hair did not wear "swim caps" back then. In fact, I think you would have gotten your arse kicked for something like that.)

That’s like saying there is a lack of affordable private chauffeurs. We don’t all need swim lessons from a private coach.
That’s what parents are for. But just like everything else we will refuse to require any responsibility from parents. Especially black parents. It’s Uncle Sam’s problem if your kids can’t swim.
It won’t be long before there are governement sponsored swim lessons for black people. What a joke.
