Before GWB Texas was historically dominated by democrats in the governors office - Bill Clements was the only R governor of Texas from 1870 - 1991. Yes that is 121 years of democrat governorship with a split two term republican toward the end
The most misleading “true” stat in American politics ... invariably presented by either those who know nothing about the history of Southern politics ... or the intellectually dishonest.

Yes, Texas was under Dem control, but the control of the CONSERVATIVE wing of the Texas Democratic party ... when Texas was a single-party state, run by a party with two VERY distinct wings.

Since when does insignificance of scope mean anything? Russian Facebook ads (150k worth) have caused a two year inquiry. Yet you say 50,000 votes is no biggie. It’s the hypocrisy that most here don’t like.
When have I ever argued that the Russians ads were anything other than insignificant?

Yes, 50k votes over 20 years (2000 per year) is utterly insignificant in a state as populous as Texas.

Not me. Imma stay and fight if that ever happens. My earliest memories are of San Antonio, my wife is from Houston, I went to school in College Station, and my wedding/first home I bought/firstborn son all happened in the Alamo City. I hope to be buried here one day (in the VERY distant future, for the record ). This is my home.

The GOP will be just fine in Texas in 2020.

Trump will be on the ballot and the GOP will kick arse riding on his coat tails.

It all about turnout and the fact that since the 2018 election, the Dems have gone too far left. They are crazy.

It’s becoming closer to doing so. That article is very interesting. I’m sure most that will comment here will actually read it before doing so.

I read the article and I believe it. My son lives in Austin and I live in East Texas. When in Austin I observed 20 or more Beto signs in Austin to any one for Cruz I knew he was in trouble. My son lives in a mixed demographic neighborhood in terms of age. It is primarily white and largely democrat. After losing big in Houston and Dallas suburbs the Republicans need messaging evolution. That is to at least say something different than what has been said since Ronald Regan. It's good to get some turnover and I hope the Republicans recruit younger candidates with more women and hispanics. You can't have most all latinos and women identifying with Democrats or that will spell future electoral disappointment. It's obvious now more than ever that city folk are different than country folk. More people live in the cities. And young people are not really identifying with Republicans.

Not the more recent D governors by any means, Anne Richards and conservative don't belong in the same area code.

Really you would have to go back to at least Connally before you could say there were "conservative" democrats.

Unless by conservative you mean compared to today's nutcase democrats then you would be correct, but hell JFK is conservative compared to today's dems.

I agree. After living in Texas and transferring to Oklahoma and then back to Texas three years later I had to produce my birth certificate, SS number and proof of current residence in Texas to get a license. I don't think there is any way an illegal could get a license.
But I did hear a lot of Spanish spoken by the help and customers at that East Texas DPS office. I spoke English and thought for a time I wasn't going to get a license. I had to go through SS to get a replacement SS card before they approved.

This is the biggest problem for the GOP, but a longer term problem that isn't likely to swing things in 2020. The myth that people just get more conservative as they get older doesn't really hold true. Just look at the voting patterns of people who came to age during the New Deal vs those who did post WWII. The new dealers voted more Democrat than the early boomers did at similar ages. The 27-35 year olds came to age during the Iraq War and the great recession. Those younger had the relatively benign Obama years and now the unpopular Trump.

Not a good foundation as those who are old currently identify pretty strongly with the GOP.

Therefore, you're a Democrat!

Don't forget to calculate dollar spent for each vote.

Beto: $19.55 per vote
Cruz: $10.70 per vote

If I had family here I would stay and fight, but I don't. Texas is nothing to me without the economy strong. It's sad because it's such an American staple and it's going to get turned into a liberal dumpster fire.

If Texas goes, so will Arizona and Florida and Georgia. So for many of us that will be a depressing dumpster fire. When that happens I will be an older man and I will support candidates advocating governmental assistance to families with elders in Assisted Living to cover my arse. It seems at that time the working population will support taxes for free stuff for most anything.

Not really. That was one quote in the article. But there are other things mentioned too that should be a concern.

Sarcasm notes and appreciated. But if Beto type of Dems are what Texas would give us then I’m good with it staying Republican.

Well maybe not forever. The UK could have gone socialist but didn't. Maybe there is hope and the interim Republicans can work on a brand new compelling message. Those who just want to show up in Washington and do nothing can retire.
