Talking politics with regular people

Anyone find alot of resistance from ordinary, basic Republican voting people, but who depise talking about politics, the great reset, military occupation in DC, election, etc.
Who is in the wrong? The person pushing these topics and trying to educate and spark dialogue about the world around them and the future of the country, or the person who resists the topics because it makes them uncomfortable?
I understand there is a time and place for everything, and it is not healthy to obsess about the politics all the time. But it can't be healthy to keep your head head buried in the sand and distracted by the bachelor and Netflix, and mundane topics like the weather.

The regulars in my gym talk politics all the time. It's the free weight area so all male. Age range is 24-75. A mix of very right wing conservative to moderates. No lefties.

It’s hard to find the right balance. Politics is always emotional, and has become even more so lately. Talking about it and getting worked up about it might be necessary sometimes, but often it’s the wrong time, the wrong place, or with the wrong people.

problem is, soon there will NEVER be a good time unless you want to be arrested for conservative viewpoints

Good point. That’s why the election integrity issue is so important and worth speaking up about.
If the election process is fair and accurate, people can “voice their opinion” in the ballot booth, at a minimum.

I know a lot of people - myself included - who have become very withheld when it comes to political conversations. I have a good job and a great family - and I am fully aware that just one slip could send it all crashing down.
Even in the days since Jan 6th we’ve seen family members turning each other in because they think differently - if that doesn’t scare you...

Talking politics with "regular people" (as opposed to this group of political junkies) can be frustrating.
With other political junkies, there will certainly be disagreements about the causes and solutions, but at least the brighter half of participants in a forum like this one tend to understand the NATURE of the issues.
With "regular people," I find that 90% do not even understand the NATURE of the issues. And they vote.
Hell, the fact that most people vote without really understanding what they are doing bothers me FAR more than the vote of someone who disagrees with me.

just because i don't speak about politics to everybody i bump into doesn't mean my head is buried in the sand.
It means i don't feel like discussing it all the damn time.
same with religion. just because i don't speak about it doesn't mean i don't have my own opinions and beliefs.

you have to know your audience these days to start these types of conversations. Generally, I don't discuss politics with people unless I have a pretty good idea what their stance is already. And if they are a polar opposite from me, it's not even worth it because those conversations never go anywhere except towards circular arguments that I really don't care to entertain.

I love the ones who say,” I’m not interested because politics doesn’t affect me!”
Oh really?

True story. My gym had a solid group of 6 or 7 men and women over 80 that came to the gym every morning to sit in the coffee lounge for an hour and shoot the breeze. NO exercise at all.
Well, Covid shut down the coffee room. They all dropped their memberships.

This is my sister. She's annoying. She also developed a lot of very misinformed opinions this past election cycle after attending an Ivy grad school. You can probably imagine what ideas her friends were filling up her head with. I guess she is right, in a way, that politics don't affect her and why she says she hates talking about them because my dumbass parents still coddle her and have her on an allowance (she's 30). She's never needed to understand how politics affect her because she's never had to take care of herself without any help.

When she gets a decent paying job ask to see her paycheck. Then show her the 'gross pay' in the fine print.
Her: 'WTF!'
You: 'Govt needs your money more than you do.'

People just aren't very smart today. When a leftist says shite like "Trump is racist" and you counter with "please tell me 1 instance of his racism" you automatically get "aw c'mon"....every.....damn.....time. Then you have righties going to bat for asswipes like Paul Ryan and Cocaine Mitch

I mean she's always worked but has no ambition to really go out and do anything substantial because she has that security blanket of dad. It's very obnoxious, even more so because she has painted me in a corner of being this pretentious arrogant prick because I don't think like her. She has absolutely no concept of how the real world works or how to get ahead, but I'm apparently the a-hole because I know how to play the game, don't kiss her arse, and call her on her bullshite. I'm not going to say I didn't get help along the way, as my parents certainly gave me plenty of help through college and grad school, but once I was done, I didn't want or need their help anymore and have gotten where I have professionally all on my own. Funny thing is, intellectually, she's brilliant; however, when it comes to "street smarts" she is severely lacking. Really a shame to waste so much potential, but such is life I guess
