These are some of the same people coming back into power who allowed the Taliban to foster Al Qaeda. It would appear the "head of the snake" was only partially chopped off.

I had read that the embassy was telling Americans to now not head to the airport as it was no longer secure.
I was wondering if they were able to exfil everyone before making that call.

I have seen conflicting reports. Most of those reporting that it has been abandoned and completely evacuated are doing so due to the flag being removed. That flag was removed and taken away by the acting US Ambassador when he was evacuated, most certainly before many other people were evacuated.

Yes it’s been abandoned. There’s been a temporary embassy set up at the airport until it can be evacuated. But the airport is already under artillery fire from all sides. The fact of the matter is the airport is surrounded. And the embassy advised all Americans in the city to “shelter in place”. Basically, those people are on their own.

"Abandoned" may or may not mean what you think it means here. As soon as the flag comes down, the Embassy is considered "non-operational" and no longer Sovereign US soil. It does not mean that the Embassy has been fully evacuated, only that diplomatic duties have been relocated to the airport.
