It "picked up speed this weekend", but the gates were documented being closed for around 16 hours total. That's not just hearsay, that's the reality. Some things still don't seem to add up.
Yeah I don’t believe at all that we managed to evacuate 8,000 yesterday. It’s just with the film footage we were shown, that’s simply not adding up at this point.

Great piece/clip by itv News. People screaming Go to Hell, Biden! in the streets.
Hope itv keeps it up. Good as anything Clarissa Ward did.

You and I are going neck and neck for breaking news in this thread.

Listening to Biden speak this afternoon, he was a little bit cheesy about the number of folks evacuated. Sounded like they might be counting ongoing flights as additional evacuations. ie out of Kabul is 1 evacuation. out of Kuwait is another evacuation. Out of Europe is another evacuation. one person could be counted three or four times.

Around these parts we call that the "Covid Count".

This might be true. From what we saw yesterday, there’s no way they got 8,000 people out of there.

There's no way "The US evacuated 8,000 people" yesterday. There was a backup of 10,000 at the airport. That's the people through the gate and waiting to be processed, and to get on a plane. All gates to the airport were shut for 8-10 hours due to the IS threat. German news sources reported planes leaving yesterday with very few people on them. Also, the US is not the only country flying in and out of the airport. The numbers simply don't add up with the time they were active and the reality that was reported.

You literally have tens of thousands of people trying to get out of a country via an airport with one runway being used by multiple nations. That airport, which belonged to and was operated by the Afghans was taken over by US troops. Half of that airport has and will continue to be occupied and maintained by a terrorist organization. Add into that the fact that somehow another terrorist organization that is a sworn enemy to the other terrorist organization has somehow managed to pose a real and substantial risk to the airport and the people there, and you have a very slow moving and needlessly complicated and dangerous endeavor.
Add to the mix we have an Administration that is completely and hopelessly disjointed that no one seems to know who is leading. Every person who speaks contradicts the one who spoke before them, and has yet to become apparent who is calling the shots. All of the "leaders" in charge of this shitshow also appear to be completely tone deaf to what the hell is actually going on.

It is also worth noting that despite all of this, Kabul still appears safer than Chicago.

For those who say life has returned to “normal” in #Kabul:
How many girls and women do you see on the streets?
How many people are still hiding in their homes?
How many people live in safe houses to avoid Taliban retribution?

What you don’t see in #Kabul is far more revealing than what you do see.
Away from the cameras, the city is gripped by hopelessness, fear, and panic.

The only thing that the US Govt can say for certain at this point in time is that we should never forget that this is all Trump's fault because he is the one who decided to abandon the people of A-ghan.
