I can only imagine converting the entire population at one time.

My question is, is the government going to force present day doctors to stay in the doctoring business? Those with a decent retirement in the bank will quit and then we have a shortage of doctors. I go to two doctors that don't accept first time Medicare patients. The only reason I got on their lists was because my wife who is not on Medicare saw them first and I was accepted on her coattails.

Even if they did stay in the profession, where are all the extra doctors, nurses, support staff, facilities and equipment, etc, etc, going to come from when all of a sudden everyone has the equivalent of Medicare?
Why does no one seem to ask a basic question like that?

Administrative costs are high due to government regulations.

You people are so dumb.

Yep, wondering if this is the same research firm that said we'd save $2500 a year under Obsmacare...

The US spent $817 billion on healthcare administrative costs in 2017, $600 billion more than Canada
The US population is nearly 9X the size of Canada's.

In other words, CANADA SPENDS 2.3 TIMES what the US spends per capita on Administrative Costs. Put differently for the math challenged, their system in our country would run $1.9 TRILLION.

That is over $1 TRILLION more than we currently spend. It's money which would not go to care at all, but rather to administrators.

GREAT IDEA THERE, tiggerthetooth!

Maybe you morons should look closely at Medicare and see it it is what you want for your medical care. Little to no choice in treatment and many things that you get now dont qualify. A lot of doctors dont take medicare because it is a loss to them.

A "Medicare" system for our primary care will degrade our entire standard of living and medical care. The public will not tolerate it.

Melt baby.
But in the future if you post a dumbass OP, complete with extensive quotes, and you disagree with it, you'd do well to make that clear at the outset.

You'd also do well to avoid respondent pejoratives when you ignore that suggestion.

Why are they comparing the costs in the US per patient to Canada’s per capita.

Because Canada has about 12 percent our population and 25% our admin costs.

Why is it that every bullshite claim is not supported by facts. Per capita the US is half the cost of Canada per capita

nstead we should convert medicare to a subscription based pricing model and give medicare folks $X to shop competing subscription offers and then pocket any savings.

You just described the Medicare Advantage program ...... and it fricking sucks. Runs less efficient than traditional Medicare model.

Okay. Can somebody explain the math to me?

In 2017 Canada had a population of 36.54 million.

They spent $217 billion on health care admin costs ($817 billion-$600 billion).

$217 billion divided by 36.54 million equals $5,938.70 per capita. Where did $551 come from?

The per capita number for the US ($2479) appears to be in range of acceptable error depending on the population numbers used.

There’s a movement by some primary care doctors who advocate for direct care to the patients thus eliminating the insurance middleman. I listened to a doctor on an AM radio talk show claim she’s reduced costs to her patients 30-40% for office visits by eliminating insurance carriers. Her solution to significantly reduce medical costs was market driven competition, reducing/eliminating insurance companies, allow for greater contributions and tax incentives for HSA and doctors would be subjected to a customer satisfaction rating system just as many other professionals and businesses are.

So by going to a single payer (Medicare) we save $600 billion in administrative costs all the while paying for all of healthcare which is up around $3.7 trillion. Now that's a hell of a deal.
