Still safer than your decision to embrace religion, alcohol, and neoconservatism.

By that standard it should be heralded as less addictive than alcohol... Given that 30% of Americans struggle with alcohol addiction at some point in their lives, this is actually less risky.

Actually in this case it does. Smoking Pot habitually as a teen, when your brain is not fully developed can and does cause brain damage. There have been studies confirming as much. Now, as an adult, with no previous psychotic issues, who is healthy can smoke pot and for the most part, would be harmless. I think the age cutoff is about 25, when your brain becomes fully developed.

The same can be said for alcohol as well. Pot is just a little more damaging because it is a pychoactive drug, where as alcohol is a depressant. Both have ill affects if done habitually while the brain develops.

Sometimes I doubt these studies' results and moreso their authors. Typically they are pushed by MADD and other prohibitionist groups to get legislatures to crack down on drinking and further raise the age of consumption.

Sometimes I wonder if they'll ever say that the brain stops developing at 75, or whatever the average life expectancy is near you.

If you Googled "can you die from overdose of marijuana" you'll find that there's info there advising that it's practically impossible to die from pot OD.

It's pretty widely known that the brain is fully developed around age 25. This isn't some kooky MADD plot to keep you from getting high. It's science.

LINK

quote:

Although brain development is subject to significant individual variation, most experts suggest that the brain is fully developed by age 25. For some people, brain development may be complete prior to age 25, while for others it may end after age 25. The mid-20s or “25” is just an average age given as checkpoint for when the brain has likely become mature.

quote:

It may seem logical that those aged 18 to 25 are completely mature, the brain still is maturing – specifically the area known as the “prefrontal cortex.” Changes occurring between ages 18 and 25 are essentially a continued process of brain development that started during puberty. When you’re 18, you’re roughly halfway through the entire stage of development. The prefrontal cortex doesn’t have nearly the functional capacity at age 18 as it does at 25.

This means that some people may have major struggles with impulsive decisions and planning behavior to reach a goal. The brain’s reward system tends to reach a high level of activation during puberty, then gradually drifts back to normal activation when a person reaches roughly the age of 25. Adults over the age of 25 tend to feel less sensitive to the influence of peer pressure and have a much easier time handling it.

He was invited by the "cool kids" to hang out at some kids house whose liberal parents had left for the weekend.

My brother, always a moral and thoughtful individual, wanted to attend because it was one of those massive house parties that he'd never been to.

Well, as was later recalled by some of his friends at the party, he was pressured into smoking marijuana. He ended up smoking the entire pack of marijuana cigarettes.

Not long after he went into convulsions and started foaming at the mouth. The people at the party held back calling 9/11 for almost 10 minutes.

When the paramedics finally arrived they could do nothing to save him.

The autopsy revealed he had 3 times the lethal dosage of blood in his THC.

But I'm sure everyone here will deny my story and the fact that my brother died after smoking that illegal narcotic.
Did you know that if you drink enough water at one time, it will kill you too? Why is water still legal?

alcohol is the real gateway drug, due to it's almost universally accepted social standing

I cannot disagree with that.

Alcohol has been with us for at least 8000 years and its dangers have been built into our evolution as a civilization. I do not condone it, nor do I advocate for its being more widely available. I advocate for more awareness of its dangers.

As for marijuana, I see it as just another avenue for the overall dangers of mind/mood-altering substances. In my mind, adding it to the mix of existing dangers from alcohol makes no sense.

Certainly, we should do it begrudgingly, rather than celebratory, and this is my message.

I reject all admonitions that it is no more harmful than alcohol, just as I would reject an argument that we should promote abuse of dogs just because in centuries past people regularly abused chickens in their voodoo rituals.

Drunkards for the most part harmed themselves and by extension their own families. Modern day drug use certainly has let that devil out of the box so that their evils are visited on a larger segment of society.

Even during the heyday of Al Capone, ordinary citizens were not routinely in danger from the evils of alcohol. Today, a huge swath of ordinary citizens are in danger of being caught up in evil propagated by the drug culture.

If the drug addiction problems happened incrementally over centuries rather than decades perhaps we as a society would evolve more routine ways to deal with it. However, it strains my intellect to see how speeding up its spread can in any way be a sensible idea.

I believe too many folks here are equating their own personal success in curbing the innate problems associated with drug use with a preferred pattern for the entire nation. It is the same as if I, gifted in math, were to advocate for mastery of differential equations as a requirement for a high school diploma.

The majority of people not so well equipped at coping with the dangers of drug usage are not sitting in their comfortable homes arguing on an internet message board - they are either laying in an emergency room waiting to be pronounced dead or they are breaking into someone's home trying to steal enough for their next fix or shooting up a neighborhood to eliminate competition - etc etc.

I am paying attention to the stats being presented about marijuana usage going down in Colorado after legalization. That is counter-intuitive to me, but I will not reject it because I have no data to refute it with. I will always change opinions based on new data. I am not convinced by posts on a message board. I will investigate that myself as I have time to do so.

Even if true, however, I still think it is still a stupid thing to do = to willingly alter your perception of reality just cannot be something I could ever advocate.

After reading through the article it seems they're arguing it develops until at least 25, possibly into the 30's. I smell a new ad campaign brewing.

quote:

It is widely debated as to which age the brain is considered “fully mature” or developed. In the past, many experts believed that the brain may have been done developing in the mid to late teens. Then along came some evidence to suggest that development may last until at least age 20. These days, a consensus of neuroscientists agree that brain development likely persists until at least the mid-20s – possibly until the 30s

Psychiatrists are the same folks that make a living off incorrectly prescribing people anti-depressants. It's a crime that these pseudo-scientists are even given a license to practice.

Marijuana consumption by Colorado high school students has dipped slightly since the state first permitted recreational cannabis use by adults, a new survey showed on Monday, contrary to concerns that legalization would increase pot use by teens

Nice link. From your link:

quote:

"Youth marijuana use can have lifelong implications. The risks, which include psychosis, suicide, drug addiction and lower IQs, have been reported based on research on much lower THC potencies than are typically sold on Colorado's commercial market,”

And the survey stated:

quote:

2015 survey by the federal Department of Health and Human Services showed that Colorado ranks first in the nation for marijuana use by youth between the ages of 12 and 17.

Your link shows it's the highest.. and that 52% of teens view it as safe for regular use.

Marijuana's illegality is the real "gateway drug." If you did not have to purchase it on the black market it would not put you in contact with harder drugs. It really is kinda sad how this old man and others like him have been brainwashed by anti-marijuana propaganda and do not even realize it. It is pretty pathetic.

It my surprise you to know that I agree with this.

In fact my original objection to marijuana was that it DID require you to perform an illegal act and thereby get you in contact with - and on the list of - drug dealers who will obviously try to get you onto harder stuff.

I am not that opposed to the legalization of pot - I am opposed to the stupidity of the people who USE the shite. Just like I don't like drunkards and I really don't like drunkards who try to convince me that what they are doing is really OK.

Not being all-prescient, I would not support legalization, but I would not aggressively oppose it either. I can see both sides of the issue relative to graduation to harder drugs.

It is the USE of the shite under any circumstance that I object to - and I genuinely ABHOR the weak-minded asshats who try to convince me that it is all for the better.
