Sounds dangerously south African to me.

Many families did in South Africa as well but they could not defend their property against what was going on... They really had 3 options:
1. hold out and eventually be killed.
2. abandon the property and move.
3. hire private security and attempt to make a stand.
Many ended up in #1 or #2. Most could not afford the private security...
