I realize that I normally don't come into contact with other people's bodily fluids.
You really don't know that when said fluids are in aerosol form (from coughing) or on surfaces you touch, like door handles, vending machines, etc.

what's to stop them from flying to Canada/Mexico and then crossing the border.
Probably no direct flights there. Also this places the element of time into their travel plans, which is the point of a "ban". More time allows authorities to catch infected individuals.

So ban all of our doctors from helping and soldiers (which I still don't understand)?
No, the only travel allowed to or from should be qualified medical personnel. They should be tested before they leave whatever African country they are in, then tested again once they get to the US then quarantined for 48 hours for observation.
The strain running through Liberia has a 50-70% mortality rate.
Not instituting some sort of ban is akin to the drunk redneck handing off his beer just before saying "watch this". Drunk, dumb and thinks he's invulnerable.

direct flights from the US to africa are few and far between. And they are really expensive.
source: went to africa last year

Let's just assume we shut down our border, what's to stop them from flying to Canada/Mexico and then crossing the border. If they are that desperate to get here, they will get here.
Mexico already has a flight ban from West African countries. I'll check to see if Canada does.
Also, increased border security (another Obama failure) would make this less of an issue, but thats another topic.
Why make the target so easy? The simple solution is enact a temporary travel ban.

Figured they would. Mexico doesn't f' around when it comes to border security in terms of ingress.

there are two flights daily to senegal from the US
There are like 10 flights a week from nigeria to the US.
I am betting there are zero from Mexico to west africa. toronto might have one or two.
I don't have a problem shutting those down, but they won't stop the flow. Most all of those people are already getting here through europe

There is a flight manifest for each passenger, no? We have a TSA we waste millions on, why not use those tools to screen passengers. If you have been to west AFrica in the past x amount of days, you are not allowed entry into the United States.
However, if you are a US citizen, entry may be granted, but only under the custody of the CDC.
How is this a hard plan to formulate?

Their outbreak is over last I checked
But much more importantly:

This is the issue. Travel bans won't really do squat unless you want to ban whole nationalities at which point what are you gonna do about the expats here/in other countries. And even then you can fake documentation if you are desperate enough to get here.
Also on the whole 48 hour thing, this disease can incubate for 21 days. It would still "get out" if you only watched for 48 hours.

if they booked there ticket through, then they should be able to see that. But often times its cheaper to book two flights, and overnight it in frankfurt.
Its not going to be easy to figure that out.
And really the TSA is incompetent.

Its not, I just don't think it will do shite as I would imagine the CDC.
what they need is screening at airports, whch they have implemented in the 4 airports with direct flights to africa. Although it really should be done in europe too.

and while liberians are not in this boat, the africans that can afford international air travel often have a passport in their former colonial country. So let's say you are nigerian, you can obtain an english passport fairly easy if you have $$/connections.

I'm guessing neither of you realize the guy who died in Dallas the other day would have passed right through these screenings they are doing at those 4 airports had they actually been doing screenings when he came through.
There is only one full proof method of ensuring a virus like Ebola does not spread, that's through isolation of those who carry the virus. Screening at airports will not work. The only way to stop it is to isolate those areas where it's currently being seen.
