But there is obviously no reason for me to repeat the detailed explanation I've provided three times. You'll just claim I've never explained my reasons the next time there is a St George thread.
Like I thought, you are just a city dweller that wants what's best for everyone.

I've already said I don't agree with the residency requirement, but you're an idiot if you think there is ZERO merit to the idea.
I suppose it's simply a coincidence that these fine stateswomen proposed this meritorious plan in the midst of the St. George issue. If there is legitimate merit to the proposal, they are too blinded by their own racism, spite and greed to grasp it.

If the SG people want their own city, why should SG residents be paid by Baton Rouge city taxpayers? SG is free to require the same for SG city employees, right?
Following your logic, if Baton Rouge already has its own city, why should non-residents of the city be required to pay for its expenses?
Governments are apparently free to abuse their powers and they do it every day. When one large segment of the population elects leaders promising them benefits from the abuses at the expense of the others, it drives those paying the bills to seek relief in whatever manner they can find. If they cannot get relief within the existing political structure, they will seek to create a new political structure. If they cannot do so and find relief within the parish, they can surely find it outside the parish. And they will, in larger and larger numbers.

However any incentive is more than what would have been offered before under a consolidated government that isn't worried about exactly where retail stores locate in the parish. Thus the parish, as a whole loses revenue.
Good post.
It's really a wide-spread problem that doesn't have a huge impact on the St George issue, but I'm sure large companies enjoy pitting local and state governments against each other. A net loss for America, no doubt.

We agree on this.
BTW, the Costco got a big tax break to build in EBR Parish; however, they didn't let local contractors bid on the project. Instead, they gave it to an oos GC.
Wouldn't you think local contractors here in BR would be given a chance?

Sweet! A St. George thread. Upvoted.
I don't post in them much but they are fun to read.

If Baton Rouge (or St. George) wants to madate that city workers live within the city limits....knock themselves out. It would be an incredibly short sighted and petty thing to do.
That being said, nothing is fair or reasonable about demanding that parish employees' residency restrictions exclude them from living in a specific municipality within that parish.
The residency requirement is the kind of thing that may create tension in the local community. It's unlikely that it will pass muster.

I follow them very closely because I live in the proposed city of St. George and I find the information on here more informative than anywhere else. My husband is definitely against it and I am just trying to get all the facts before I decide. But, right now I am leaning against it because I am not convinced that it would result in a better, more efficient government. So, I hope ya'll keep the debate up!

Not necessarily, shouldn't the city ban Zachary, Central and Baker citizens from working for the rest of the parish???
Why just ban SG folk if they become a city????

Yeah I have family that live in both Baton Rouge and St. George so it's interesting to follow. I have my opinion on it but I stay out of the debate cause this thread is better left to the people it affects.

Can anyone tell me who is currently leading the opposition movement? I've seen plenty of critiques of the st. George leaders, but outside of Delgado and a LSU professor I know nothing about I'm not sure who all the players are. I've heard that Together BR had a large part in the latest event, can anyone confirm or deny that report?
Thanks in advance, trying to stay informed.

The EBRPSB and the StG people need to get together to work something out within the current framework and not blow up the City-Parish system (which has worked very well to this point).

Kip Holden and the members of the inner city council to name a few.

I agree, the deplorable school situation is driving this bus.

It's the only thing driving the bus and everyone knows it. They don't want the other issues that come with a city, they just want the schools.
Let them create an ISD and be done with it.

I'd be happy.
A new city might be good, but it might be bad. There's no use in taking a chance if a big benefit of all this is an ISD is a completely separate matter as it initially was.

An ISD without a new city would be the ideal solution IMO.
It's unfortunately failed in the legislature twice now.

Exactly. And I think in the end that will (or at least should) be the compromise. However, the EBRPSS is going to attempt to move heaven and earth to make sure that doesn't happen. The unincorporated area is their golden goose that they don't want to let go.
The fact of the matter is that the EBRPSS is broken, and no amount of tax dollars is going to fix it. To think otherwise is completely naive.
While most pragmatic people in the St. George area aren't dumb enough to believe that an ISD is going to completely remedy the puplic school issues in EBR, I understand how they are sick and tired of continuing to throw tax dollars away into a failed system. I think the thoughts of those in St. George is that an ISD may not be perfect, but it certainly CANNOT be any worse than the current option.
