St. George keeps changing their budget.

The other night, the Residents Against the Breakway had a meeting and it was stated that "84% of new city budget would consist of sales tax revenue." This number was clearly obtained using the "Proposed Annual Budget for the City of St. George", found here: LINK
You'll see that if you divide sales tax revenue by total revenue and round off, you get 84%
But St. George says this is not so!

I'm confused, St. George. The pdf you published tells us the "Proposed Budget for the City of St. George" is 80 million. Here you tell us the "actual budget" is 175 million. Why is the "proposed budget" so much smaller than the "actual budget" ?

Again... not true. What we showed here is a general fund. If you add up what we pay for all dedicated parish property taxes which we will continue to pay as well as a ½ cent sewer and a ½ cent roads the actual budget is approximately 175 million. So if you do an actual percentage breakdown it’s approximately 38% of our budget will consist of sales tax revenue not 84%. Fact.

Yea, these people are ready to run their own town.

Maybe you should ask them for clarification on their page or something. Either it's a typo, sleight of hand on the meaning of "general fund" or some other dishonesty, or a genuine and large mistake. I'm sure everyone will appreciate your support of clarity on the facts of the debate.

If this is a mistake then that would make me even more concerned they can't run a city.

all the more reason to ask someone who can answer!

Neither side of this is doing itself any favors, but StG proponents really need to get their shite together.
The real problem is that the personalities in this issue have become so polarized that any actual solution is impossible. The EBRPSB and the StG people need to get together to work something out within the current framework and not blow up the City-Parish system (which has worked very well to this point).

Well on the one hand, this is complicated stuff and no one has a complete picture of how it would all turn out. Anyone that says otherwise is lying or ignorant. So I want to cut them some slack if there are minor inconsistencies.
But on the other, this is a huge change and people don't know what is going to happen. For that reason (primarily) I am against this thing moving forward.
Well, that's half the reason. The other half is you don't form a city that will create huge unknown consequences to get a few extra votes on a different issue (independent school district).

I'm not really sure why Rainey is even arguing about the % of sales tax figure?
Is he anticipating the city of BR is going to keep the Bluebonnet retail district's sales taxes so the SG proponents need to start showing how they can survive without those sales taxes?
It's weird that he feels compelled to even address the sales tax issue.

i am in a superb position to troll both sides in comment sections & facebook (& IRL!), being a BRcity resident who has no problem in principle with them incorporating, especially since it looks unlikely to happen to me
sorry for partying

You're in a similar situation with Lionel Rainey, the primary spokesman and driver of the SG incorporation effort.
He doesn't live in the proposed St George area either!
Kinda weird, huh?

Of course!
But then when you're asked how big the budget is by someone who is worried about big government, you use the 80 mil figure.
I am touched, BTW, that you would respond to an OP of mine without insults.

To be fair, James Carville ran Bill Clinton's campaign for President of the United States - yet Carville is not a citizen of the United States or even of planet Earth. Its clear from looking at his head that he is part of an alien race.

well shite, lionel is clearly trolling everyone in the parish, with much success
i expect him to reveal his ruse sometime in 201... wait a sec, doesn't Rainey have some business interest in CSG, or was that someone else

Not weird if you follow the money. LR makes a lot of money from government contracts and is connected with state senator Bodi "Boss Hogg" White.

Doesn't look like it. Seems like they left it out.

This. I received an email that had quotes from an STG proponent calling Magnet School parents "segregationists".
