You're right. He'd throw a screaming fit that the black folks are still here. He wasn't a fan at all.

He was a decent Republican President who tore a nation apart during the "War of Northern Aggression". He became a martyr when he was killed. His decisions led to more Americans Soldiers dying during the Civil War than all other U.S. wars combined. Estimates range from 620,000 to 750,000 deaths, surpassing the combined total of the American Revolution, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

Oh, is that why Abe forced conscription and killed some of those that opposed? Or paid immigrants right off the boat to go fight Johnny Reb?

He was a strong leader but that alone isn't such a compliment. Stalin and Mao and that mustache guy were all strong leaders too.

JOHN WILKS BOOTH.

The greatest American Traitor of all time.

Lincoln assignation enabled the end of meaningful reconstruction and uplifting of former slaves coupled with destruction of indigenous peoples for profit.

Lay it all at the feet of that fricking stooge.

I’ve joked that the only good thing that Sherman did during the war was burn Atlanta to the ground.

That joke aside, you aren’t lying that they did that. And what’s worse is Lincoln fan boyed hard with Sherman in letters back and forth about his path of destruction. Lincoln gets the credit of winning and the favorable stories but he isn’t the saint that history has made him out to be.

I have always considered him to be one of the worst US Presidents ever.

He allowed the country to fracture because he wouldn’t call in both sides and tell them to knock it off before the war. He showed no leadership.

Trump would have called a meeting with everyone and told them that we are ending slavery. He would have told the industrialized North to help the Agriculture South. He would have required them to work together and find a way to develop a machine that would be cheaper and more efficient than owning slaves. In other words the cotton gin or some equivalent would have been developed a lot sooner.

Well, let's see...

He sought an economic agenda to place larger tax burdens on the South to pay for industrialization in the North, which would create a permanent economic burden on the South. That's where all the tax revenue came from before the War.

He invaded Virginia after the South Carolina militia fired on Ft. Sumter. Keep in mind that the US Army was at least partially a State asset at the time.

He occupied Maryland and blockaded the State Capital Building to prevent the State Legislature from meeting to vote on secession.

He suspended Habeas Corpus and jailed citizens (in the North) despite the fact that there was no war declared.

He imprisoned members of the press that wrote unfavorable articles about him and his military actions in the South.

He never tried to find a constitutional solution to the conflict. He wanted a war and he caused one. When he couldn't win it on the battlefield he attacked the civilians, including destroying or stealing their property for no military reason. 800,000 Americans died while he was in charge and largely because of his actions, and the aftermath destroyed billions of dollars in wealth in the South in 1865 dollars. It was probably more damaging than the Treaty of Versailles in 1918 was to Germany.

Worst of all, he dramatically increased the power of the Federal Government and centralized its powers. He wasn't alone in this, lots of people up North wanted it, but we are still paying for that today.

You ought to paint that memorial of him red.

He was killed because he wanted to bypass the central banks and created his own currency.

Of which quickly disappeared after his death.

In hindsight, our leader, should have made olive branches after Gettysburg. The North only had to win one time and the game was over… The South had to win every time and the jig was up then.

Jefferson Davis was a nincompoop!

The biggest what if is what if Sumter had never been attacked? Did Lincoln have the political support to launch a war without that spark?
