Hank is the board contrarian. For you to try to lump him in as just another “dumb red republican” or whatever bigoted nonsense you were spouting is funny to anyone that has spent more than a day in this board. Speaking from a place of ignorance and being racist/bigoted seems to be your forte.

Now the speech I heard on my tour, and in true Texas fashion.....

James Bonham was sent out twice to get help, the second time he returned under heavy fire, the last to enter the Alamo. When he met with Colonel Travis, as others looked on, he said there was little hope reinforcements would arrive.

Travis asked him why he returned to what would be certain death and he responded "I shall die with the bravest group of men I have ever encountered". This galvanized the wavering defenders to their mortal task.

They died but the cry for revenge united the states, who eventually annexed much of the west, uniting the east with the west which lead to the United States.

The United States then went on to defeat tyranny in two World Wars and saving the world.

So when someone tells you one person cannot make a difference in the world, maybe they cant but one Texan can...... by gosh one Texan can.

why was Mexico opposed to us having slaves when they had slaves?
say what?

Mexico had started abolishing slavery several years before the arrival of the Old 300 in 1825. It was abolished nationwide by 1829.

The problem was that Mexico had promised the empresarios that they COULD bring their slaves and keep them. This was the first of several violations by the central government in Mexico City.

I am a Center-Right libertarian, which puts me about two standard deviations Left of the mean here. I am the one always being called a commie or proggie or socialist or some such nonsense.

Every couple of weeks, I remind them that most of the population would consider ME “Right wing” in many ways, and that this place is just full of fringe lunatics.

So, today I commented that everyone was squabbling, and you basically accused me of being part of some Right wing cabal, conspiring to silence anyone here to its Left.

It was hilarious (1) in just being so very wrong and (2) in proving ME so very RIGHT.

I need to reinforce your comment about goliad. Its a historical monument that provides a real visual presentation about the Santa Anna war. The good guys surrendered and were quickly executed. Santa Anna got busted at San Jacinto, and was a allowed to return to Mexico. Santa Anna and all of his officers should have been executed, they were not
Most people do not understand the law of war, most of which is non-codified (like common law). For enforcement, tribunals like Nuremburg are very much the exception. Historically, national armies have to enforce the law themselves, during the actual conflict.

Execution of the men who surrendered at Goliad was a clear violation by Mexico. When the Texians captured Santa Anna at San Jacinto, the doctrine of “reprisal” would have justified General Houston in executing every Mexican captured, including the commander and his officers

The reason that reprisal is “allowed” is that reprisal works to enforce the law of war by punishing the earlier violation.

Some readings of the law of war even indicate that reprisal is REQUIRED, in order to punish the earler violation, though this IS a minority view.

Sorry, When Santa Anna and his Cronies tore up the 1824 Constitution, he started the issue. All the "racist" revisionist history the media and educators have been peddling is just that, revisionist. Then again growing up through the Gonzales schools probably has me of a different opinion than most.....like growing up with a chip against Sam Houston for torching the town.

Aggie Hank, I find your arguments informative as I do others here. As a 40 year over the road trucker, I learn much from the well thought out arguments on this site. Thank you sir.

Hearing about historical events and then visiting those places is a world of difference.

Walking around the battle fields of Kennesaw Mt or the wide-open spaces at the The Battle of Wounded Knee, it's hard to imagine being in a battle for your very life.

Thank you for the kind words, and you are very welcome.

One reason that I tolerate the abuse here is the hope that I do provide something useful for the more-moderate members to consider in formulating their own views.

Most people call you those names simply because you’re an arrogant, pretentious douche bag. You’re intelligent, but instead of being humble and discussing with people, you’re constantly condescending. You also try and twist certain stories to show how your view, along with the view of the left is really the proper conservative way of thinking. It’s tiring that you’re one of those people that aren’t principled and would rather just take the contrarian position because you feel you can out-argue other people. And, at that point, we can circle back to the top to where you’re just an arrogant pretentious douche bag.
