I paid mine off. So no, I will not be accepting this. It’s incredibly shitty that those who did what’s right are paying for those who procrastinated. But it’s the way of our government today.

Someone give this man a trophy. He paid off a debt before doing anything else. Only like a dozen people have done this before.

Yes? Why the hell wouldn’t I?

At least you’ll benefit from the economic boost that’s about to occur since millions of people won’t have a note anymore and can spend their money with you

I sure hope the people who take the money get a letter at tax time saying they have to claim it as income in the form of a bonus. That’ll make some heads spin.

Gonna need the downvoters to explain themselves

I’ve been in for 5 now. Do I have to serve 4 more or does my time served apply?
On a serious note, I only have 13k left and have been paying it off. I absolutely do not want this to go through. It’s ridiculous.

It seems to me you think anyone currently carrying a student loan balance is incapable of managing money. While you had outstanding loans, were you incapable of managing money as well?

Congress made public student loan forgiveness tax-free as part of the American Recovery Plan last year.

I am always of the mind to fight BS like this out of the government, but if you lose the fight it is stupid to not utilize it. Pride will only put you at a disadvantage.
It isn't like there is a prize for eating $8K.

I’m a pretty dang solid conservative but I’m torn on this issue. I know this isn’t gonna be a popular opinion on here but I have a better vantage point than most since I work in education. This isn’t just random adults who took out loans and don’t want to pay for them. A lot if not most are pretty much kids who were coerced into taking these loans by a combination of state and federal government and the colleges if you want to look at them as a separate entities. Kids are pressured from a young age to attend college even though a lot would be better off taking a different path. The loans are offered to 18-22 year olds without any supervision. The high schools, colleges, and loan services have pretty much been creepers tricking kids to get into their vans with candy. You have kids (yes I consider 18-22 still a kid) in majors that will never be able to pay getting crazy amounts of loans.
It’s predatory and the government absolutely is one of if not the main culprit. I completely understand how unfair it is to share the bill with those who paid their own way or were paid for by family. There is no overlooking that. We should have came together and put laws on the books a long time to put a stop to this.
I think certain majors shouldn’t receive much or any loan money and a lot of the students in college should be directed elsewhere for career training/opportunities. I don’t see an easy answer here and I don’t think it is as black and white as many make it out to be on either side.

So make the problem worse instead of addressing the actual issues that led us to this point?

I don't agree with this. You can't tell someone what to major in. but they need to be responsible for their own debt. Get on the 25 year income based repayment plan and suck it up.

End federally backed loans. Once the institutions see that many of their students will no longer be able to afford their crazy high prices, prices come down.

This is EXACTLY correct. I have seen it for years and have advised all my students and kids to take a little money as possible. People do not even understand the difference between subsidized and unsubsidized student loans when having to sign up for loans.

You won’t get a business loan for some dumb freaking business you come up with that doesn’t show promise . I think the same should apply to majors. You can’t receive loan or at least not much for being a gender studies major. That’s not telling people what they can major in it is just telling them that their major of choice doesn’t promise a big enough return for to receive a loan. You and I agree ending federally back students loans would be a good idea. They are simply handed out too easily and I believe that was done on purpose.

For some reason, everyone views Social Security as some kinda gotcha for Libertarians. While I hate SS, if the gov't decides to give me back the money it stole from me starting at 65, then I'm going to take it back. Doing so doesn't make me agree with it and it doesn't make me complicit.
So, when the thief offers you some of your money back, you take it.

Yup I have 6k left and my wife has 18k. If I got a vote on whether or not to have them forgiven, I’d vote no.
This is a terrible idea on so many levels. They are literally buying votes with taxpayer money.

This
Kinda similar to the genius behind capping repayment to 5% of your income. That will stretch out repayment by years and years and greatly increase the amount of interest paid. These people aren't stupid, they're evil.
