Your concerns with the bill are how it relates to an annual deficit, yes?

My concerns lie in the fact that it isn’t a conservative bill other than it cuts taxes and the fact that it’s being pushed through when the GOP doesn’t really have to start running on legislation until around February-March. It goes against what Trump promised his base in many ways.

I'll take tax cuts any day. The issue is out of control spending.

Elaborate, please. In what ways is that not conservative? Granted, there are going to be some amendments and riders that aren't exactly conservative, but the core of it is, to my eyes.

Why is this a concern?

Specifically, what promise is being broken?

To the OP. This country has bills to pay. The populace is getting older. The Fed Govt gets bigger and bigger every year. How does your 20 year old mind propose we balance the budget? Reduce the deficit to zero? What do you propose we do? I would like to know your thoughts.

I take offense to that as I’m downing a six pack of modelo after finals and I’m 21. But my point is that this bill doesn’t pay bills or reduce government.

A shrunken federal government would be a blessing. Increased regulation is mostly burdensome on the private sector. See the last couple decades.

There is no reason to blame him. An individual that does not have a strong political influence from family members or the greater community at a young age is almost always going to adopt the basic ideology of whatever professors they may have.

However, I’m about to graduate from LSU with a next December with degree in Poli Sci and a concentration in Government and Policy and sights on a tier one law school, and for the life of me, I can’t understand this. Forgive my naivety on conservative policy, but can anyone convince me why this tax bill is a good thing in any way? To me, all it seems like is Trump selling his base a piece of legislation that will only hurt them and their children in the long run along with a massive hole in the deficit to be blown that doesn’t sound like something conservatives and tea party members would be excited about. So why is everyone so eager to get this passed? Is it because of the hacks it takes at Obamacare, or do people generally believe the people that voted for Trump will benefit from this bill? Or is it simply just to have some sort of political “win?”

Do you read the crap you write? Hmm, Poli Sci graduate, makes sense.

I am sorry that LSU Poli Sci department does not require you to take 9 hours of economics like it should. As I am not going to get into the specifics of intermediate macroeconomics, I will point you to the years of 1981 and 1986, years that two huge tax cuts were pushed through, it was also the greatest sustained growth in the GDP in America post WW2.

What people don't understand is that economics is not common sense. If it was, you wouldn't have third world countries. It is easy to say that the tax cuts will lead to a raise in the deficit, but that does not account for doing the math behind growth. This bill actually brings more money in to the government for taxes if growth his 2.4%. The average growth rate per year since 1948 has 3.19%. Since there has not been a year of growth over 3% since 2005, I think it is reasonable to assume that having the top 3 highest corporate tax rates in the world could be a reason for that. As we have started to have quarters of growth again over 3% since the election, imagine what the growth will go to once we bring corporate tax rates back in line with other developed worlds.

No, this is precisely what I want. A federal government small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Small enough to drown in a thimble is my preference, a small bathtub would be tolerable. The Dem visions of a Federal Utopia with a vast ocean of FedGov is intolerable to those who enjoy freedom.

I will grant the former. However, a tax bill is unlikely to also establish an annual budget regardless if it's a cut or a raise. It does potentially reduce government, in that revenues will be on a downturn for a short while. Unfortunately, due to our monetary policy, any shortage in revenue will be met with greater borrowing - which, to me, is the essential problem, and not a lack of revenue.

Take a look at this video by John Stossel. It illustrates the absurdity of putting our money in the hands of bureaucrats to decide how to spend our money.

NYC Bathrooms

Basically, it shows a government bureaucrat trying to defend building a small public bathroom for $2M (it took 7 years to build), while a privately managed park nearby built a much nicer one in 5 months for $271K. This is an isolated example, but it is prevalent throughout our government at so many levels. Common sense does not have a home in our government.

Tax reform is something even Obama wanted. Tax reform is well over do, but the negative part of this bill is they have tried to write it and pass it through committee in less than 2 months.

Most people congress have no idea what is in it.

This is Obamacare part 2

He told his supporters that people like him wouldn’t be getting a break. Some of this bill includes some corporate welfare which has been proven to be ineffective and the cuts on the estate tax are honestly egregious coming from the perspective of an out of Work coal miner in Kentucky? How does that help me? Why isn’t the GOP looking at places like Pittsburgh as a model and turning these places into areas of green energy now that it’s becoming just as profitable as oil and gas now that they have these people’s attention? Why don’t they actually invest in infrastructure that dems would help out on? Why is tax cuts what must be done?
If republicans believe in personal responsibility, why don’t they look to the states making millions in revenue from taxing and regulating marijuana in this opioid epidemic?

But I understand from this board; the main issue is that they just want the government to be smaller, no matter how it happens. That type of thinking just seems problematic to me in a globalist world.

Holy f****** s***. I hope they never let you near courtroom. We want to tax cut because it's our f****** money. End of story. Why can't you freaking liberals figure out how to reduce the size of government instead of taxing the s*** out of everybody. You pal or exhibit a why liberals should be put on a cargo ship that is sunk in the deepest part of the ocean.
