Is this justice?

quote:

A teacher at Slidell High School is no longer employed with the suburban public school district after making a racially inflammatory Facebook post last week regarding Nike's new Colin Kaepernick ad campaign, the St. Tammany Parish school system announced Tuesday (Sept. 11).

Valerie Scogin, who taught math at the school since 2008, wrote the message in the comment stream of a Slidell High graduate's post on Sept. 5, two days after Nike unveiled its "Dream Crazy" campaign featuring the former NFL quarterback who gained notoriety for leading protests against racial inequality by kneeling during the National Anthem prior to games.

quote:

In the Facebook post, which has been widely circulated on social media, Scogin starts by writing "They don't have to live in that country. They could go back. But it was their own people selling them into slavery to begin with and tearing (treating) them even worse in those countries of origin.

"Want not to be stereotyped, tell people of that color to quit acting like animals and perpetuating the stereotype. Many are average people; the few ruin it."

Can someone please explain to me how any of this is racist? I've read it numerous times and can't figure this out. She points out historical facts (she should teach history, not math!) and then emphasizes how current negative perceptions are a result of "the few" who act like animals.

If you don't believe her statements to be true, I challenge you (especially if you're white) to go walk around Rocheblave and Dorgenois streets and report back to us.

ETA: I do believe it is stupid for her to post this, especially being a teacher. I think she does a terrible job of explaining her intent; however, I don't find this racist. I do not believe she should be fired or lose her job, regardless of how stupid a decision this was. Really I think anyone posting on facebook and twitter are stupid, so she is the norm for that ridiculous social media community.

It is social justice

You have a few bad apples - white, Mexican, black, etc. that ruin it for everyone.

I am usually someone that laughs at "racist claims" and points out the absurdity of the faux outrage. However, this one is pretty bad. There are several parts that I would see as racist.

- They could go back - this is a stupid comment when their ancestors may have been in this country for generations. "Going back" does not make sense. No one would say that to someone of European descent that has been here for generations.

- Tell POC to quit acting like animals. This makes it sound like she is saying all POC act like animals. If she was referring to a smaller group, she should have specified.

- Many are average people. Again - bad word choice. Sounds like she is saying they are only "average".

She may not have meant it to be racist - I have no idea. But I would certainly perceive this to be racist.

That is stereotypical racism. Not debatable.

Agreed. And even if she’s not racist (who knows, she might be), she’s definitely stupid. Big time lack of awareness.

That’s a stupid post.
I’m not sure I’m sorry she was fired.

a stupid comment

is different from a racist or bigoted comment. Her comments were stupid and probably bigoted but not racist.

In any group it’s always a few that ruin it.

People in the public eye like police and teachers, should never post their political thoughts on Facebook.

I would have voted to fire her had she worked at my school. Teachers are one of those professions which is supposed to have the trust of anyone. How would that woman have the trust of any black students after calling some of them animals?

I certainly wouldn't trust a black teacher with my children if she called whites animals, I'd want her fired, so how can I feel differently when the races are reversed, I"m not a liberal

I think her intent is that they portend to hate this country, so they can certainly leave and go to their homeland

She clearly states "the few" at the end of her post

quote:

- Many are average people. Again - bad word choice. Sounds like she is saying they are only "average".

Poor word choice, but again I read her intent as average in terms of you, me and most others in this country. I don't read this as calling them "not exceptional," but rather as her saying they aren't animal thugs.

I do agree her post is stupid. It's not something you should ever be putting out there as a teacher. I also believe everyone posting any nonsense on Fauxbook is stupid, so she is part of the norm in that sense.

I do NOT believe she should lose her job though. Stupid post: yes. Racist: no.

Moronic Slidell teacher fired for "completely unnecessary and stupid" facebook post.

Fixed it for you. Why would she even post that to the public?

I have no sympathy for people losing their jobs for posting useless inflammatory nonsense on social media. Social Media is a dangerous radioactive growth on our society . If you decide to willingly jump into that toxic cesspool, I have no sympathy for you.

She has every right in this country to say whatever stupid things she wants. And her employer has every right to fire her for those comments.

With freedom comes responsibility.

Excellent take, I'd like to add that at a minimum, her word choice was incredibly imflamitory

Plus, she should have damned well known better. It's not like it's a big secret that social media comments can get you fired as a public official, doubly true for educators

Even if she "didn't mean to be racist"; she was very unwise

The comments were both stupid and racist. This is hard to defend.
Whether she should have been fired is another issue.

She has a right to free speech but holy hell what a dumb thing to say in a public forum.

You really have to ask yourself, what is the upside to posting that before hitting the button.
