They know what FBI investigation would turn up. Nothing. Uncorroborated allegation from 36 years ago .

the GOP probably approached Kav and said "do you want to fight this?" and he said "yes"
this galvanized the right, with huge never Trumpers (like Graham) joining in with Trump's faction and McConnel
so they got a spot on FNC that night and then Cocaine Mitch went on the fricking warpath 30 minutes later
they said "We are using this to rile up our base and call out the Democrats for playing politics"

Honestly he had no choice. Once you are accused, you ultimately have to defend immediately. If he didn't defend himself, the accuser would use that as an admittance of guilt

I am sure the R's realized this is a tipping point and wanted to make a stand because if they acquiesce now, the Dems will become even more enabled and try to destroy the entire lot of them
