EVERY business combination in restraint of trade is illegal. (Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890).

Only if the monopoly was caused by government meddling or interference in the first place, which is usually the case in infrastructure monopolies.

If Netflix has to pay more for its bandwidth it will cost more. But I can chose not to pay for it. Netflix has Way more bargaining power than I do in keeping its internet bill lower. Netflix is also tremendously less necessary than internet service.

The only monopoly created by the Government was in favor of businesses like Netflix which passed the cost of its doing its business along to everyone regardless of whether they were using the service.

Seems like the government busted up a monopoly by removing regulations that favored one over the other.

Monopolies destroy the free market faster than Socialism does, so in this case the argument that the market will right the ship in regards to a monopoly is null.

Teddy Roosevelt says yes. If it wasn't for him, the railroad companies would have taken this country over.

The same railroad companies that were granted land by the U.S. government who had no reasonable claim to the property?

Interesting. Sounds like net neutrality....

The founding fathers were pretty clear that the breakup of monopolies were supposed to be one of the few functions of central government. I'll heed their advice.

I must have missed that entry in the Federalist or Anti-Federalist Papers.

The government should not break up monopolies, it should nationalize them and make money for social programs.

Only if the monopolistic business is illegally using their power to keep competitors out of the markets.

AKA let's say Wal Mart tells a vendor "We won't buy from you unless you stop selling to other people" that's illegal.

Likewise if Disney told a movie theater "We won't let you show our movies if you don't stop showing our competitors movies"

Being big is fine as long as you don't use your power to muscle out competition unfairly.
