Jew can refer to religion or an ethnic group or both. The main thing that constitutes an ethnicity is a shared ancestry. Saying they are not a race is correct but a meaningless distinction. In your example, if someone wisely repented of Judaism, they could still be considered ethnically Jewish if they have jewish ancestry.

I know many conservatives that know the difference in religion and ethnicity that agree that Judaism is still considered a religion. Can people have Jewish heritage? Yes but the same can be said for Catholics, etc. Can Jewish heritage be traced back to a region of the world like a lot of races? Yes but so can Mennonites. Does that make Mennonites a race or religion?

the distinctions are genetic. If a religious group has an ancestral area and is insular enough to develop distinct genetics that differentiate them from surrounding populations, then yes, they are both a religion and an ethnicity like the Jews. Some easy examples are the Maronite Catholics in Lebanon and Syria and the Coptic Christians in Egypt.

Jews are significantly genetically different from other Eurasian people, and have their own haploid groups. They’re obviously a separate ethnicity. There is less in common genetically between Jews and Germans than there is between Sicilians and Norwegians.

Jews have always been rampant socialists. They practically invented it. Conservative Christians have been duped to believing that Israel the modern nation equates to Israel of the Bible because of a healthy slathering of propaganda and a general ignorance of their own scriptures.

1. American Jews don’t give a rat’s arse about Israel. They live here, not there. They care about America. Most American Jews trace their lineages to having been here long before World War 2, so they see America as their promised land, not Israel.

2. Don’t act like Hollywood is mainstream Jews. Hollywood is Hollywood. The media is the media. Despite the fact that Jews are over represented does not mean that those institutions represent mainstream Jewish thought. To explain why a small group of Jews owns the media would require a much longer thread (it’s a fascinating story, I recommend googling it).

3. There are a lot of complex reasons why Jews tend to vote for democrats, but I will try to give a few of the main reasons why many do (I do not, and neither does about half of my extended family):

a. Democrats tend to be seen as a big tent for minorities to protect themselves by binding together. Jews were the tip of the spear during the civil rights movement for blacks, and were absolutely critical in organizing and man power. Jews did this because they often faced similar discrimination as blacks at the time.

b. The overwhelming majority of Jews live in just three metro areas: New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. The democratic party is seen as the party championing urban concerns, thus Jews living in predominantly urban areas have a lot more in common.

c. The democratic party brands itself as the party for the educated, especially college professors. The more degrees one earns, the more likely they are to vote democrat, and no ethnicity in America averages more degrees per capita than Jews.

d. Democrats tend to be the patrons of the institutions of art and culture that Jews tend to want to belong to. There’s an art and theater culture that is dominated by Democratic machine politics. You have to go along to get along.

e. Anti-semitism. Republicans are often associated (rightly or wrongly) with being the party representing “rednecks” and rural working class whites. There is a perception (too often times accurate) of anti-semitism by republican politicians as well as by republicans themselves. I have faced this as someone who is involved in my local and state GOP, and experienced open anti-Semitism within the party. Most Jews have little tolerance for even a hint of this, and don’t feel welcome in the Republican Party. Why they choose to ignore the rapidly rising anti-semitism from the black caucus and Islamic wings of the Democratic Party, I have no idea. Those folks are much more open and upfront with it than any rednecks or wasps I’ve encountered.
