“There’s nothing else out there that addresses substance abuse for young, young kids from their perspective,” said Kama Einhorn, a senior content manager with Sesame Workshop, adding that the program also aims to help parents explain their situations to their kids. “Even a parent at their most vulnerable—at the worst of their struggle—can take one thing away when they watch it with their kids, then that serves the purpose,” Einhorn said.

I’m glad I was a kid in the 70s & 80s.

So Karli will be learning how to dance around a pole in her next few years on Sesame Street.

Yes, because exposing 5yr olds to drug addicts is the smart thing to do. This is so woke

In the international versions they have one who's HIV positive, and another who suffers from "food insecurity," so are we really surprised?

Gender fluid, tranny-Muppet incoming...

The real lesson here is the left wing has no qualms about targeting kids. If they don't kill them at birth they will even expose their own kids to any manner of perversions in service to their ideology. Just imagine what they would be willing to do to ours.

Finally someone addresses what it’s like for a child to grow up in Livingston Parish.

Holy shite, some of you really don’t want young kids to have any understanding of a really shitty situation that’s going on in their life

Young children shouldn't be exposed to some things. That's why movies are rated R. Because young children shouldn't be exposed to sex, violence, foul language, drug use, etc.

Sesame Street is targeted to 3-5 year olds. It has 50 years of programming in the can.

Surly a parent can find 3-4 years of morally appropriate Sesame Streets!

God made you the parents! A village can only raise idiots!

I want my young kids to be oblivious to the world’s jackassery for as long as possible.

There will be plenty of time to be disgusted by others’ behavior once they’re teens and adults.

But what about kids in shitty situations right now? There are quite a lot of them now. I'd wager we have had half a million opioid related deaths since 2000 by now, and countless other lives affected. The number of yearly deaths has doubled from 2007, and has nearly quintupled since 2000. It's a massive crisis, honestly.

This is an online Muppet who will probably never make it onto the show or anywhere else outside of these very specific resources.

Karli is in foster care while her mother recovers from her addiction. If you think your children at age 4-6 won't encounter peers that don't live with their biological parents for similar reasons, you have a much more optimistic view if humanity than I do. I've seen the kids that go to my daughter's daycare. If she has questions about that in the future, I would love to use Sesame Street as a resource to help her understand.

The real problem is that there are already an enormous number of 5 year olds exposed to drug addicts in their own home every day. That’s the whole point.

If someone can provide a way to teach kids to strive to grow despite the flaws of their drug addicted parents, I’m all for it.

You do understand that there are different ways to present similar topics, right?

Yea, I wouldn’t want to bring a 5 year old to see Crimson Tide. But I’m really glad we had shows like Mr. Rogers Neighborhood to address challenging topics like nuclear war in a format that children could process and understand.

Obviously none of us have seen this new sesame character yet, so we don’t know if their presentation of addiction is ultimately harmful or helpful. But given that it is Sesame Street, comparing this character to showing a child an R rated movie is just fricking dumb.
