If you are a Lone Wolf why use encrypted comms and who da frick are you talking back and forth with that it has to be encrypted? I also see he did not mention the hazards of sloped roofs.

One of the policemen who took his picture and reported the shooter as a suspicious person reported that the shooter was on his phone.
He has no social media, so what was he looking at? Or who was he communicating with?

People they use this type of language to obfuscate when they do not know.
Encrypted comms could mean many things
He use an incognito web browser to do a live chat with tech support
He use and SSL certificate on a chat session
He transferred a file via SFTP
I doubt seriously that guy had some advanced, encrypted satellite phone until I see evidence.
Someone with any minor level of computer science knowledge can use encrypted comms. Makes it sound James Bond when it is every day run of the mill stuff we do on the internet.

What level of encryption? WhatsApp? Or something else like it? Civilians don’t typically have access to TRULY encrypted comms without having a source with access to government equipment…

A lot of apps are encrypted.
I’m pretty sure WhatsApp is and there’s a few others that are designed to make your comms “disappear”.
Not like Snapchat disappear but still on a server, just actually disappear.
That said, nothing is ever “truly” deleted. Encrypted just means they won’t be able to look up tower data and see what was said.
I’m sure the federal government has the tech to find out more depending on how motivated they are.
