It's populist legislation that screws giant corporations while still protecting the little guy and mom and pop shops that can't afford the wage increase.

The giant corporations can afford it, the little guy can't.

And also, this kind of legislation being introduced by a GOP senator would've been unheard as little as 6 years ago and would've been a huge scandal as far back as the mid 2000s. It shows how far the GOP base has come.

Opinions?

Stupid.

Government should never, ever, ever try to determine the worth or value of an employee's skills at a private company. If you don't like your pay, better your skills and go to another job.

Disappointing. Congress is not the place for stunts like this. Hawley is making a joke. A sick one.

If you want wages to go up, or want wages to be at market rates, then you need to close the borders until other countries play by the same rules.

This isn't the answer. I'm not certain that Hawley is serious here, but maybe he is.

I am not a fan of the idea. Hawley is currently a toxic politician due to his objections on 1/6/21, and I highly doubt this legislation goes anywhere. However, I will admit that it is a brilliant political play by Sen Hawley.

I think it's dumb, but also think he likely introduced it to make a point that minimum wage increases are harmful to small businesses. In that regard, that might get the message to some people.

I can't imagine many billion dollar companies have many workers making less than $15 domestically. If so, probably not far off from $15, so even if that part passed it wouldn't change their books.

I would guess that companies like HEB grocers come close to that. Lots of high school kids would lose their jobs if Hawley's bill passed.

I think he is serious. Large companies can take advantage of economies of scale, investments in robotics, offshoring,...This protects the small business owners and allows them to remain competitive. It’s not ideal, but certainly puts the democrats on their heels a bit.

thats dumb. why would anyone work at the local grocery store for $8 when they can work at mcdonalds or walmart for $15. This will do exactly the opposite of what he wants.

What if he's absolutely sincere about this?

This kind of populist legislation is the future of the GOP and frankly, I find myself struggling to oppose it.

These giant corporations do not deserve our protection. They want things like this stopped along with getting as much tax cuts and deregulation?

Then knock it off with the cultural marxist bullshite or go beg for your tax cuts and deregulation from Elizabeth Warren.

I support this.

And combining this with Hawley's proposal has merit as well.

Good point. I don't think a lot of people think of grocery stores but they would possibly qualify.

As others have stated, I don't think this is serious legislation by him anyway. It's just to make a point about who minimum wage harms(small business) and who benefits from that (big business).

Same goes for safety regulations and other compliance regulations. Big companies can handle it and that's why they support it while simultaneously try to limit its impact. Small businesses can't get past those costs or as a startup.

People are going to rail against this in this thread and they’re fighting battles we already lost.

I like the ideas in this legislation and it shows me that Hawley might be able to appeal beyond the traditional Republican tent.
