So they just thought the distributor was gonna take the tax hit and not pass that cost along the chain?

Yes and they didn't think the stores would post the tax on the shelf.

Nope Daddy Starbucks is exempt.

Well considering a black cup of coffee is probably around 3 dollars now as it is....and anything different is more, they're already charging you for that sugar packet. frick Starbucks.

Still less cancerous than income taxes or estate taxes.

I’m a conservative libertarian but if we can’t get the gov’t out of healthcare (preferred option) then this is the only choice we have. Make it a huge tax on refined sugars and carbohydrates. We have to make the fatties pay thier own way somehow.

You think this regressive tax is going towards healthcare?

Considering the fungibility of funds, it can go to health care. The health care of the city officials, with any leftover being blown on whatever stupid project they want.

This is the part I don't understand. I would have thought the very purpose of the tax was to raise the price with the hopes of decreasing consumption. Costco definitely shows liquor taxes alongside liquor prices in their stores - and I believe they are one of the largest sellers of liquor in the world.

It may not go to healthcare but sin taxes do work. That’s why the big beverage companies are fighting them so hard. It will decrease consumption for sure. If you stop to get gas and a water is $1 and a Gatorade or coke is $3. What will people buy most of the time. Not clue why the actual tax number are but poor people who consume the most sugary drinks definitely will look at the price difference.

It is. It's a hard truth to reinforce to your constituents though.

"It's more expensive for your own good. You'll just have to deal with it!"

Easier and more expedient to blame wholesalers and retail.

$10.34/$15.99 = a 65% tax? You serious Clark?

And is Starbucks seriously exempt as a retailer? Those sugary explosions they label “coffee” are making kids fatter by the second.

I guess. The liquor tax just seems to not be a problem at all.

I would move immediately. I work outdoors. My workers work outdoors. The amount of money I spend on Gatorade a year is probably insane.

Also Mountain Dew...I like my caffeine and not a coffee fan..but is what it is don't judge me.

I have a problem with all taxes

but

Since liquor is made from sugar I'm surprised they aren't slapping this tax on it. I should make a few phone calls and send a few emails suggesting this.

"Conservative libertarians" believe in free markets

This is as proggy a tax as you'll find.
