Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is ripping President Trump for threatening to shut down the government over funding for a U.S.-Mexico border wall.
“If the President pursues this path, against the wishes of both Republicans and Democrats, as well as the majority of the American people, he will be heading towards a government shutdown which nobody will like and which won’t accomplish anything," Schumer said in a statement on Wednesday.
Trump signaled during a Tuesday night rally in Phoenix that he is willing to shut down the government to try to force Congress to pass funding for a border wall, one of his main campaign promises.
"Build that wall. Now, the obstructionist Democrats would like us not to do it, but believe me — if we have to close down our government, we're building that wall," Trump said.

Including funds for a physical wall is considered a nonstarter for Democrats, whose votes will be needed to get a government spending bill through the Senate.
Some Republicans, particularly from states along the southern border, have also voiced skepticism that a stand-alone wall is the right approach.
The fight over Trump's border wall is expected to come to a head in September, when lawmakers face an end-of-the-month deadline to fund the government and avoid a shutdown.
If Congress and the White House can't get a deal — or pass a short-term spending bill known as a continuing resolution (CR) — by Oct. 1, the government will shut down.
The House included money for the wall in a national security-related funding bill they passed before the August recess, but that bill is considered dead on arrival in the Senate.
The Trump administration initially pushed for money for the border wall in a short-term funding bill passed in May, but backed down from the threat. Instead, the legislation included money for border security and a boost in defense spending.

Schumer, "Including funds for a physical wall is considered a nonstarter for Democrats, whose votes will be needed to get a government spending bill through the Senate."
Trump, "Excluding funds for a physical wall is considered a nonstarter for me."
Bet when free shite stops flowing in Democratic districts, some will back down faster than Kim the Fat, on his Guam threat!

More than 80% of the government is essential and doesn't get shut down. This plays right into the hands of Trump who likes to run the government like a small government conservative.

In all seriousness, Trump should hold a presser (preferably prime time) to address the nation and lay out the facts that the Democrats are shutting down the Government in order to obstruct one of the prime campaign promises he was elected on from going through.

Personally, I think the wall is a waste of money, but I wouldn't blame Trump for holding firm on this one.
Do people really think he will lose support if he shuts down the government?

Absolutely and I suspect he will. It was never going to work out any other way but by making them move, they never have cooperated and never will.

Dear Chuck,
Let's make a deal. I won't bring the wall issue down to a government shutdown if you can get your niece to stop making movies.
Sincerely,
T R U M P

"Shutting down the government" will continue to be used as an excuse until we actually let it happen. It's also hyperbolic because the government never "shuts down".

the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which called for construction of 700 miles of fencing and enhanced surveillance technology, such as unmanned drones, ground-based sensors, satellites, radar coverage and cameras. Sen. Chuck Schumer and then-Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were among a bipartisan majority that voted in favor of the legislation, and it was signed into law by President George W. Bush.

“We don’t understand why the Democrats are so wholeheartedly against it,” Mulvaney said. “They voted for it in 2006, then-Senator Obama voted for it. Senator Schumer voted for, Senator Clinton voted for it. So, I don’t understand why Democrats apply in politics just because Donald Trump is in office.”

Easiest solution is to let the dems shut it down.
After 1 week nuke the Filibuster and go to simple majority. Pass the budget and move forward on tax reform, healthcare and the wall.

Problem is that the GOP cucks in the Senate can't be counted on to get to 51 votes even...
