CNN Headline:
America's ongoing school nurses shortage turns dire: 'I don't know what the school year is going to bring'

My question, is a school nurse really necessary?

I went to private school K-12 and never had a “school nurse”.

What’s the point? Is it just more “administration” to an already top heavy government department?

Somebody has to hand out the free condoms to eight year-olds.

Never went to a school with a nurse.

Gotta have that school nurse to keep ibuprofen on lockdown without parental consent and to get the 14 year old the abortion without parental consent.

Their primary responsibility is to load the body bags into the refrigerated truck/temp morgue parked behind the school.

There's plenty of foreigners waiting to fill those vacancies. Hell, look at today's doctor's situations.

I know of 2 schools very near me with full on clinics. A nurse practitioner, nurse, and mental health counselor all on staff. They see 20+ patients daily.

I worked in Eastern Kentucky a bit.

Guy at works wife was a school nurse, but for whole school district.

She did a lot. I think a school nurse is needed in a lot of poor areas. Urban and rural.
Lots of these kids have really shitty parents. They don't get medical issues addressed at home. School nurse can be an advocate for the kid.

I'm not a bleeding heart. But, school nurses can help a lot of kids in shitty situations due to their stupid parents.

I’m in education.

But I didn’t know I was going to spend a 33 year career in education when I went to school.

If I had known I was going to have a career in education I would have went to school to be a school nurse.

Cake job.

When my wife was in nursing school one of her classes was publIc health. One of the assignments was to go to a school and give a talk on a public health topic. She was assigned a high school and was told to give her talk on prenatal care.

No such thing existed in New Iberia when I lived there.
But our HS had 12 football coaches so if you got hurt in PE somebody was close by.

I think a lot of state depts of education have mandated nursing positions based on school size. You have >X kids enrolled, full-time nurse.

The schools around here require RNs a lot of the time. And pay $20-$25/hr. Not sure how they ever fill any of those positions.

Went to school in the 60's and we had a school nurse but if I remember she had the entire school district to make her various runs to sick kids.

It's a public school thing...

It's what we in the business call a "Band Aid Nurse"...

Never had a school nurse - if you got hurt at recess, teacher told you to toughen up.
