San Francisco is ready to apologize to Black residents. Reparations advocates want more

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco's supervisors plan to offer a formal apology to Black residents for decades of racist laws and policies perpetrated by the city, a long-awaited first step as it considers providing reparations.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote Tuesday on the resolution apologizing to African Americans and their descendants. All 11 members have signed on as sponsors, guaranteeing its passage. It would be one of the first major U.S. cities to do so.

The resolution calls on San Francisco to not repeat the harmful policies and practices, and to commit “to making substantial ongoing, systemic, and programmatic investments” in Black communities. There are about 46,000 Black residents in San Francisco.

“An apology from this city is very concrete and is not just symbolic, as admitting fault is a major step in making amends,” Supervisor Shamann Walton, the only Black member of the board and chief proponent of reparations, said at a committee hearing on the resolution earlier this month.

Others say the apology is insufficient on its own for true atonement.

Apologize for what? Geez. California wasn't a slave state and nobody alive today had anything to do with it. They should tell blacks to get the frick over it.
Slavery isn't a thing anymore, let it go.

A state that never had slaves, which means that its residents never owned slaves.

It's like being responsible for a child that you didn't have with a woman you didn't sleep with.

Apology admits fault, which opens the door to law suits especially if there's no official declaration of reparations.

What would qualify as true atonement?

I know what they could do to make reparations. Simply say that all the merchandise in SF stores is free to black people!

Oh wait, they already did that.

Of course they want more. It will never be enough. It's all they have to guilt white liberals into giving them free stuff.

No amount of reparations will ever move the needle. I've rarely heard the black community say how much it would take for them to quit committing felonies and trying to take what isn't theirs.

Even when a ridiculous amount is thrown out, they come in with something even more ridiculous. Reparations are a meaningless concept. It's the concept of giving a man a fish vs. teaching a man to fish. They don't want to learn to fish.

Lets be honest, this is an apology for being white, since no one on thst board has ever owned a slave. No person of any shade should ever have to apologize fore their melanin content.

california should be required to pay every black person in that state no less than $5 billion dollars each, even if they just crossed the border yesterday.

and no federal bailouts from our tax money

it's no different then covid payouts
go ahead and stimulate the economy

I was exiled from Nova Scotia, I demand payments for my hardships in life.
Next, the Vietnamese deserve something as well.
Might as well get ready to pay the illegals who crossed the border too, they had to endure severe hardships at the border.
