re: Salon: "1917" has one major flaw - it's irresponsibly nationalistic

Yeah I was reading one of my favorite blogs and they randomly went after stoicism. It was weird how they could say people generally not thinking of themselves are awful.

He looks like the type of guy who probably walks around the drive-in asking people if he could suck their toes.

Stoicism is very entangled with Western ideals. It's also very individualistic and internal, both opposing forces of the modern progressive movement

World War I starts due to the Russians using a Serbian group of Unification or Death, more commonly known as "The Black Hand;" to push the Austria-Hungary Empire out of the Serbian area that they had taken over in the year 1908.
The aim of the Russians was to gain control of it's long term goal of Istanbul, which it had been trying to take for near 70 years at this point.
There is a long period from near the start of the Crimean War up until 1914 the British and French were blocking and countering the Russian moves to take Istanbul.
The change is alliances happens due to the Austria-Hungary move into Croatia area. The Turks seeing the Russian gaining influence in Serbia area, bringing in German military advisers.

1917 should cleanup at the Academy awards but it probably wont because of the ignorant political correctness of Hollywood which is exemplified in the article this thread references.
The only films even considered for major awards must deal with whitey bad, brown people oppressed, AIDS, LGBTQ or something along those lines.

Even if we are only being told a microcosmic story about two soldiers trying to survive a dangerous mission, we should still understand the larger tapestry in which those characters are mere threads.
And there it is. Politics must be involved in everything. Even if it’s not at all relevant to the story you’re telling.

Absolutely.

I felt the same way at the time about the last truly great war epic, “Saving Private Ryan”. I still think it’s the greatest movie ever nominated for Best Picture not to win.

I am convinced that the roots of it go back to the male ability to withstand physical pain without whining. Women scream if they see a mouse. If a man cut his hand on a blade he kept his mouth shut and kept on sawing. Modern males seem to have lost that.

Well you may enjoy this true story. My older brother (Air Force) was talking to a WWII vet the year the movie came out. Bro knew that the vet was in the first group landing on D-Day.
Bro: 'Have you seen the movie?'
Vet: 'Nope. I know what happened.'
Bro: 'What was it like?'
Vet: 'I was in the back of the landing craft. When the door dropped I saw the first guys get mowed down by machine guy fire. So I climbed over the side wall into the water. It was deep water but I was a good swimmer.'
Bro: 'You swam with your rifle?'
Vet: 'No, I left the gun in the boat.'
Bro: 'So, what did you do for a rifle when you reached the beach.'
Vet: 'Oh, there were plenty of rifles all over the beach. I just picked one up.'
Bro: 'You just described the movie.'
Vet: 'Well, I might see it then.'

Now we live in a world where America is on the brink of war with Iran, where right-wing nationalists in this country are terrorizing racial minorities in the name of being "pro-America," and in which the talk of national borders is used to justify ripping apart families because they don’t belong to our “nation
These people are insane.
Please tell me of all these new oppressions of racial minorities that have evolved since 2016.

Is there a need for me to see WWI era British propaganda here in the 21st Century?
We are still being lied to WRT the fact that the Lusitania was hauling war materiel from the USA to Britain. The cargo included ammo, which was seen in actual sea dives performed by divers, and components used to manufacture field artillery high explosives.

You're certainly correct about the stupidity of US involvement. But history is always fascinating. If this movie is hated by the left it might just be accurate.

No,
no we don't,
We can all be perfectly content and enjoy the story of the 2 soldiers without any additional information.

Right. I already know the history. I’ve studied. I certainly don’t need Hollywood’s version.
