If I had prescience to know they were going to be such such a fountain of perpetual vagina sand, I might've chosen a different screen name .

Why would politics have any place in this movie?

The writer goes on to say that is "political" and "immoral" to film a movie with a neutral take on war. That is just an unbelievable take quake that I can't even deal with it.

Saw it yesterday, definitely one to see in the theater. It's sad like most war movies but the imagery is great.

That rhetoric motivated World War I just as much as it drives Trumpism today. As such, rewarding “1917” with awards and acclaim — at least acclaim that ignores its problematic politics in order to myopically focus on its abstract artistic merits — implicitly validates a philosophy that our world desperately, desperately needs to delegitimize.

That rhetoric could've ended WWI. The fact is that these complicated international alliances forced each belligerent country to fight another country simply because of a contractual obligation. That's more like globalism than nationalism. Hell, the biggest rally cry for the British when they got in the war was "Remember Belgium".

That's their goal. I'm convinced so many of these types just had zero challenges in their childhood, and this is their psyche just looking for something, anything, to believe in because they don't believe in themselves.

Yeah I made that point in OP

Nationalism certainly played a role (primarily Germany), but imperialism and globalism combined to make it a "world" war. It's almost impossible for a large group of truly nationalistic countries to go all Captain Planet and start a "world" war

There is much moral accountability to go around in World War I. As historian Lawrence Rosenthal wrote, the Great Powers that started World War I did so because of “. . . a new and aggressive nationalism, different from its predecessors, [that] engaged the fierce us-them group emotions – loyalty inwards, aggression outwards

I’m shocked they left out international high finance......

That's part of it but conflict forces creativity and a good life is bad for business for a self-professed "creative type". Also the universal love for this (apparently great) movie requires a lot of "nuance" to try to be negative while reviewing. I call it being clever (which is trying to sound smart without being smart).

That's why memes like "Islam is right about women" or "It's OK to be white" are so funny to me. They've created so much bullshite conflict they are a Godian Knot with relatively simple ideas.

Saw it last night, people of color were pretty fairly represented in keeping with history.

Those are easily the best memes ever created.

All it does is put a mirror on the situation and causes mass confusion and panic.

Sam Mendes shoehorned a turban wearing Sikh and one black guy into the movie for no other reason than to be “multicultural” and “multinational”.

Author obviously didn’t pay attention

I find it amusing when people send me 'journalist pieces' from Salon as proof of something, and then complain about sites like Breitbart or InfoWars

It's definitely worth the money and go see it in a good theater. I'm no expert on cinematography but the way the movie is shot is incredible. I'm not going to give anything away by saying this but it's basically shot in a way that the camera follows the main characters without any breaks until a little more than halfway thru the movie then there is one brief blackout scene then it continues till the end. It's amazing!

1917 should cleanup at the Academy awards but it probably wont because of the ignorant political correctness of Hollywood which is exemplified in the article this thread references.

I haven't seen the movie but I've read a lot of the transcripts collected by archivists around 1960-70 who interviewed the remaining WWI vets from the US.

I didn't see a lot of nationalism in their recollections. The overwhelming consistency in their stories was extreme Stoicism. A man does not complain.

So, if the question was 'How was it to lose your leg from a land mine?' or 'How was it to lose an eye while being gassed in the trenches?'
The answer was always something like: 'Oh, it wasn't so bad. Some guys got it worse. I have no regrets.'

Things have changed a lot in our culture regarding what it means to be a man.
