2) No one will stop them.
3) They are tired of NATO (the USA) creeping ever closer to Russia's borders and installing missile systems. Ukraine has lately been toying with the idea of joining NATO.

Putin dreams of reuniting the USSR and believes they never should've split off in the first place. Ukraine is very rich in natural resources and isn't a member of NATO, so there would be no military response from the rest of the world required, such as there would be if they *were* a NATO member.
In short, it's the easiest to take and rich with resources.
