My dad grew up dirt poor in Bradley County, AR and picked cotton by hand as a kid. Why is it automatically assumed by white liberals "cotton picker" has racial connotations?

Because it's easy. Large plantations in the Ms Delta definitely had slaves. Later on, they had share croppers. I would bet outside of the delta, very few whites had slaves and did their own picking. My grandfather in Simpson Co., Ms., grew cotton and had 8 kids; 4 boys and 4 girls. They all picked cotton among many of the other chores. All 8 graduated college, but education was important to my grandparents.

Hispanics overwhelmingly vote for a school mascot name but it’s racist because white liberals say so?

Seriously, I hope all white liberals DIAF

White people picked cotton, too. Why did the Liberals assume that only black people did that?

My grandfather was one of them. Grew up around Robstown. Not sure if the sports team goes back to the 1930's or not, but I believe the baseball team he played on were the "Cotton Pickers". Back then, it was mostly German and some Irish families in the area.

As usual, this is all because some nosy nobodies think it's horrible. Wait till they find out that they didn't even farm that country until long after the civil war, and there might not be more than a hand full of black folks in the district.

When the issue was brought up in 2017, several Robstown residents explained "cotton picker" represents [our] Hispanic culture and pride.

Why Hispanic? Why do some people insist on tying every cotton-pickin’ thing to race? Why not just say “we grow some of the finest cotton in the world, right here in Robstown, and we are damned proud of that? Cotton paid for that scoreboard. Cotton paid for those uniforms. Cotton pays to paint our schoolhouse.”

Twitter, and all the liberals behind it, can go choke on one.

I drove from Houston to Corpus last weekend and had no idea so much cotton was harvested in that area.

It’s 0% racist but all of the blue haired self hating white people dont really care about that.

Wait until they get ahold of Hereford HS in the Panhandle.

Mascot is Whitefaces, they doctor it by calling themselves the Hostile Herd.

I guarantee my father picked more cotton than 99% of all living black people.

He was a cotton pickin’ sumbitch.

I don’t like this mascot because cows are a dumb, semi-domesticated, fully controlled animal that is 100% guaranteed to be slaughtered.

That’s funny. I’ve been through Robstown for work several times. The HS is right on the highway. First time I saw the name I thought “WTF”

Hispanic people in South TX don’t view their past the same way as black people. Current generations are proud to say their families came here with nothing and made it.

Update from Kansas. So far no heat on the Solomon Gorillas and the Wakefield Bombers. Of course we still have at least a dozen high schools who still use Indians as their mascot so the line is kind of long.

Can they please get around to the South Garland Colonels?

That one was so bad my SO decided to go to a different school in Garland. Of course she chose the Lakeview Centennial Patriots.

There were very few blacks around Robstown Tx back when they took that name.
