My dad grew up dirt poor in Bradley County, AR and picked cotton by hand as a kid. Why is it automatically assumed by white liberals "cotton picker" has racial connotations?

In 2019, Robstown, TX (pop. 11,261) was comprised of 93.8% Hispanics, 5.8% whites, and 0% blacks.

Cairo High School in Cairo, Georgia calls its teams the Syrup Makers. I'm going to make an educated guess and say the original workers in this agricultural endeavor were black slaves. If so, should the Cairo Syrup Makers change their name? Its only a rhetorical question. My mind is already made up. Makers it is.
