Robin Williams admired the American Flag. He hopes you do too. Long May You Wave!!

The term tends to be overused, but this man was truly a creative genius. One-of-a-kind, actually.
If Robin was around today, I hope he would still do this routine. He'd be canceled if he did it today, though. The Wayans brothers just released a movie ("Scary Movie 6"?) that's doing very well at the box office, but critics and virtue-signaling Hollywood weirdo's are up in arms because it contains humor which they consider to be politically incorrect.
I just saw where Sylvestor Stallone put those phonies in their place, though, so way to go, Rocky.

At first you just do not know where Robin is going with his performance. Then, it turns and your patriotism is honored and asked for.

I acknowledge him as an icon, but he's never made me laugh. Ever. I think he's good as a dramatic actor in Good Will Hunting. None of his comedy ever made me laugh out loud. Se he says some clever things. But he comes across as a sweaty fast-talking amphetamine addict, probably comes across that way because that's exactly what he was.

There is absolutely nothing controversial about the bit in OP, by 2026 standards. Why whould that bit have him cancelled in modern times?

Anyone notice the stage? Could be a Nazi symbol.

I don't like this phrase, but I guess we will have to agree to disagree. This was clearly a scripted routine, which I found funny, but I've always preferred the guys who didn't need a script or scripted jokes in order to be funny. Imo, Robin was up there with the likes of Groucho Marx and Jonathan Winters when it came to being genuinely quick-witted and not needing a script. (Personally, I also think that Martin Short belongs in that group, too).
Imo, some of Robin Willuams best work was as a guest on talk shows. He would just "let it fly" with spontaneous comments and routines. He did bring a high-energy level to most of his appearances, but that was never a turn-off to me.

The best comedian of all time.

Here I go again, but we will have to agree to disagree here, too. Robin said here that the country was 204 years old, so this performance was circa 1980. Since then, we have unfortunately seen the rise of 1) The phony, agenda-driven concept called Political Correctness, 2) Virtue-Signaling being turned into an art form, and 3) Finally, this insane woke-joke environment that makes simple Political Correctness seem almost politically incorrect itself.
Even Jerry Seinfeld, hardly a MAGA guy, said in 2024 that the Left had killed comedy. He was apparently pressured into apologizing for that comment about 10 months later, but his original comment was clearly how he felt.
Heck, Don Rickles wouldn't be allowed to do his shtick today. I was a kid when he would appear on the Dean Martin roasts in the late 1970's. That was network television, yet everybody back then understood it was just jokes. But like I said, no mainstream comedian could appear on network television today and do Don's routines.
As for the flag, there are a ton of people on the Left who disrespect the flag and the country now. Did you miss the whole Colin Kaepernicke situation in the NFL? Drew Brees said he would never kneel and disrespect the flag or the anthem, but he took so much heat that he ended up caving like a $2 suit.
Recently, Billie Eilish (I barely know who she is) said that America was "stolen land." The irony of that was some people did some research and discovered that her mansion is supposedly located on a sacred Indian site. As of today, I don't think that the Virtue-Signaling woke-joke phony has given the land back.
Nothing personal, but you're kidding yourself if you think that 2026 America isn't much different from 1980 America. Those two era's are worlds apart.

I never made that argument. You are making a straw man.
My position is that the Robin Williams bit in OP would not be cancelled if done today in 2026. There's nothing controversial about it.

he also had a reputation for stealing material
When he entered a comedy club word would spread for the comics to "lock it down" -- that is, not do their best stuff, so he couldn't steal it.
Supposedly Ray Romano went on Letterman and did a routine about cell phones. The next night RW went on and did the same bit -- unaware RR had done it already. He even added stutters and pauses to make it look like he was improvising.
His mother was from Jackson MS though, so there's that.

There's a scene in some Mork ep where for some reason he's tied up in a chair. Someone walks in and asks him why. He replies: "This is the only way I can sit through Phil Donahue"
Probably makes no sense to anyone under 40, but if you hated PD as much as I did, it's a masterpiece.

One of my favorite comedians.

I've done standup. I've performed standup at clubs. I love standup. It's my favorite form of entertainment. I just never found RW to be funny. Very clever, but never laugh out loud funny.

Jonathan Winters has always been a good comparison for Williams. Winters was a Favre of mine when I was younger. Very absurdist, but dry humor…

His brain just worked differently than most others. He was amazing in his craft.
