I remember when communist was an insult. Maybe it still would be if more people remembered the Soviet gulag, lines of people standing in freezing rain for hours for a loaf of bread, and innocent people tortured and killed in Cambodia, Vietnam, North Korea, Cuba, China, etc.

When I signed my enlistment papers 30 years ago, there was a question asking if I belonged to or had ever belonged to, the Communist Party. A ‘yes’ answer was a bar to enlistment.
